Practical lesson 1

1.Translate the text into English

They said to us “Build Europe”. But doesn't Europe already exist in the form of
a common culture? After all, even the idea of European kinship could not have
arisen if there were no common history and culture and the desire to
participate in them: we should not forget what sources of spiritual and
intellectual unity were Humanism, the Renaissance and the cosmopolitan
tradition.Under the conditions of the absence of a single language and the
presence of traditions originating from the texts and languages of Antiquity,
this basis of ancient culture was formed thanks to translations, thanks to the
transition from one civilization to another, from one language to another.
From ancient Hebrew to Greek, from Greek to Latin, from Latin to local
languages: the text of the Old Testament, which English and German
Protestants now identify with their own national culture, is the greatest
example.
Since people think in French, can we say that there is a French thought? Can
we say that through translation we are heard by other nations? Can you say
that you hear yourself in a text written in one language and translated into
another? The works of the specialists in the humanities and social sciences
who gathered for this round table have been translated into almost all
European languages. The results are impressive: Catherine Clement has been
translated into English, German, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Romanian, Hungarian,
Bulgarian, Greek, Russian, Czech. Works of Jean Pierre Vernand - in English,
German, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Polish, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese,
Serbian and other languages. In addition, these authors were translated
outside Europe - into Chinese, Japanese, Arabic. The works of Emmanuel Leroy
Ladurie have been translated into English, German, Danish, Norwegian,
Swedish, Polish, Russian, Romanian, Hungarian. As for Pierre Bourdieu, his
works can be found in English, German, Finnish, Swedish, Polish, Greek,
Spanish, Italian, Portuguese translations.
