AGRICULTURAL ADAPTATION
Scientists believe, particularly in low latitudes, climate change will have a huge impact on
agriculture. Southern Africa’s maize crop could fall by 30% by 2030
(patterns of rainfall and temperature, extreme weather, distributions of pests and diseases)
farmers can adapt to new conditions: new irrigation systems, educating farmers in water
harvesting techniques, drought-resistant strains of crops, shade trees planted to protect
seedlings, new cropping patterns
In Gambia, chemical fertilisers have been reduced, improved water harvesting such as dams and
pits store water for long periods, and places to store seeds introduced ro help with unpredicted
rainfall
Affordable, simple technology, increased food security
Knowledge of techniques needed
more severe and frequent droughts and floods, as well as periods of water shortage,
require careful management
