ICELAND: TECTONIC HAZARDS

Iceland lies on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a constructive plate margin that


stretches through the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

-volcanic eruptions on average every 5 years.

-over 320,000 people live there and one million visit each year

-Tectonic activity is a low risk, because of the effective scientific


monitoring and awareness of dangers

-Tectonic activity brings huge benefits to Iceland

Geothermal energy is used to generated 25% of Iceland’s electricity (most of


the rest is HEP)

Iceland’s dramatic landscapes with waterfalls, hot springs, glaciers, lava fields
has supported a huge tourism industry, and provided jobs

Volcanic rocks are used in road and building construction

Natural occurring hot water- some reached by cracks from earthquakes- and
steam provides hot water and central heating for 90% of buildings, including
greenhouses and swimming pools
