Tips for Version 1 - Sorts without Names
* I would recommend introducing the unnamed sorts whole
group.
Step 1: Have students cut out cards.
Step 2: Have students discuss what they notice about the
cards. (what is the topic, what do they know about the
topic, do they notice any similarities)
Step 3: Students may be given clues to what the categories
are. You can give them one card for each category to serve
as a ‘guide’ card.
Step 4: Complete sort and check

- - - - -> Extend the activity at math stations.

Students can save their cards in a baggie and complete
the following activities at math stations.
1. Re-sort the cards to improve fluency
2. Glue the cards inside their math notebook
3. Explain how the cards in each category are related
(inside math notebook)
4. Create their own cards that fit under each category
(inside math notebook).

Version 2 - Sorts with Names

* If you would like a quick activity/assessment, have
students complete this sort independently.
 Math Sorts
Day 1
1. Write your Name & Date!

2. Write your number on the back of each card.

3. Cut out the sorting cards.

4. Sort the cards into categories.

5. Discuss with your partner how you sorted

your cards.

6. Store cards & sorting paper in a baggie.

Day 2
1. Re-sort your cards.

2. Discuss with your partner how you sorted your

cards.

3. Glue sorting paper and cards inside math

notebook.

4. Explain how you sorted your cards in your math

notebook.

5. Create at least one card that fits under each

category.
