LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON

You have learned how to multiply whole numbers. Now, you will learn how
to multiply decimal up to 2 decimal places by 1-2 digit whole numbers. First, let us
recall how to multiply whole numbers.

1. 528 2. 856 3. 245 4. 93 5. 587

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Have you ever looked at the price of something? It is usually given as a
decimal. We use decimals everyday while dealing with money, weight, and length.
Decimal numbers are used in situations where more accuracy is required than the
whole numbers can provide.

As with whole numbers, sometimes you run into situations where you
need to multiply decimals. Multiplication is a building block of Math, so it is
important to be comfortable with.

Multiplication of decimals is one of the most frequently used operations

in our daily lives.

Study this example: 7.44 x 12 =

Follow these STEPS:

1. Write the factors in 2. Multiply like you do 3. Put the decimal point in
vertical form. with whole numbers. the product.

7.44 7.44 7.44 2 decimal places

X 12 X 12 X 12
1488 1488
+ 744 +744
8928 89.28 2 decimal places

• The number of decimal

places in the product is
equal to that of the
decimal places in the
factors.

Analyze this problem:

CJ wants to offer his help to those in need during the CoVid-19 pandemic.
He decided to donate seven bags of rice to their barangay.

Each bag of rice weighed 2.75 kg. How many kilograms of rice did he
donate?

Answer the following questions before proceeding to the illustration.

• How will you describe CJ as a person?

• If you were CJ, would you do the same? Why or why not?
Study the illustration for the problem.

RICE RICE RICE RICE RICE RICE RICE

2.75 kg 2.75 kg 2.75 kg 2.75 kg 2.75 kg 2.75 kg 2.75 kg

To find out the total weight of rice that CJ donated, we need to multiply
2.75 kg by 7.
Follow these STEPS: (Critical Thinking)

1. Write the factors in 2. Multiply like you do 3. Put the decimal point
vertical form. with whole numbers. in the product.

pandemic, we need to eat healthy food such as fruit and
vegetables. That is why, Carlo bought apples at Php15.50
each. How much did he pay for a dozen apples?

1. What is the problem asking us to find? ________________

2. How can we solve for the answer? ________________
3. What kind of number is 15.50? What about dozen?
How many pieces a dozen is? _________________
4. How many decimal places are there in Php15.50? ______
5. How many decimal places should there be in the product?
6. What is the answer? _________________

REMEMBER

To multiply decimal up to 2 decimal places by 1-2-digit whole numbers:

1. write the factors in vertical form or in column.

2. multiply just like whole numbers;

• multiply each digit of the multiplicand with the multiplier.

• start from the hundredths, to the tenths and whole numbers.
• regroup if needed.
• Add the partial products.
3. Put the decimal point in the product.

• The number of decimal places in the product is equal to that of the

decimal places in the factors.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Aling Rosa bought the following items to add to Cj’s donation for
those in need in their barangay. Help them to complete the table. Find how
much they spent in all.

Item Quantity Unit Price Total

2 dozens Php 5.50

Egg

14 pcs. Php18.50
Sardines

Instant 21 pcs. Php6.25

Noodles
7 Kg.
Php54.50
Sugar
Alcohol
7 pcs. Php92.25

• To the Parent: You can work together. Make sure your kids know that you
are available if there’s a difficulty or problem, but it’s important to work
independently.
