EXPECTATIONS

You will round off decimal numbers to the nearest tenths, hundredths
and thousandths

Specifically, this module will help you to:

❖ round off decimal numbers;
❖ determine the place value and value of a digit ; and
❖ apply the Rules of the Place Value System in identifying the place
value and value of digits

Start your journey in learning more as you

recall your lessons on decimals. I am sure you are
ready and excited to answer the Pretest. Smile and
PRETEST Enjoy!

Looking Back to Your Lesson

Before going further, let us try to recall your lesson on rounding off
whole numbers.
Rules in rounding off whole numbers:
1. If the number you are rounding is followed by 5,6,7,8 or 9, round the
number up (add 1 to the digit you are rounding)
2. If the number you are rounding is followed by 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, round the
number down (retain the number you are rounding)

Directions: A. Complete the table by rounding off to the indicated place value.
Number 1 was done for you.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Rounding is a way of simplifying numbers to make them easier to understand or
work with. Rounding can be used when an exact number isn’t needed and an
approximate answer will do. Your mastery of the place value and your knowledge of the
rules in rounding off will help you round off decimals easily.
To round decimals :
1. Identify the digit to be rounded-off.
2. Examine the digit to the right of the required place.
a. If the digit is greater than 5, add 1 to the digit at the required place.
b. If the digit is less than 5, retain the digit at the required place.
c. Drop all the digits to the right of the required place.

Study the chart below:

ROUNDING DECIMALS
Find your place and look next door,
5 or greater, add one more.

All digits in front, stay the same.

All digits behind, zero’s the name.

Round 3.452 To The Nearest Hundredths

1.472 1.470
7 is at the hundredths place.
We look next door and find the number 2.
2 is less than 5 and so 7 remains the same.

Round 23.986 To The Nearest Tenths

23.386 23.400
3 is at the tenths place.
We look next door and find the number 8.
8 is more than 5 and so we increase 3 to 4.

REMEMBER
To round off decimals:

1. Find the place value you want (the "rounding digit") and look at the digit
just to the right of it.
2. If that digit is less than 5, do not change the rounding digit but drop all
digits to the right of it.
3. If that digit is greater than or equal to five, add one to the rounding digit
and drop all digits to the right of it.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Directions: TRUE or FALSE. If TRUE state the reason that makes it correct and if
FALSE, state the reason why and give the right answer on the space provided. Examples
are given as your guide.
Example #1 0.259 rounded to the nearest tenths is 0.3
Answer: TRUE because the number to the right of digit 2 is
5, therefore the number is round up.
Example #2 Given 0.7389 rounded to the nearest hundredths is 0.73
Answer: FALSE because the number to the right of digit 3 is
8 therefore, the correct answer is 0.74
Answer the following.

1. 0.3784 rounded to the nearest tenths is 0.4

_________________________________________________________________
2. If 2.5893 is rounded to the nearest hundredths it is 2.58
________________________________________________________________
3. When 20.5183 is rounded to the nearest thousandths the answer is 20.519
_________________________________________________________________
4. Given 50.3457 if rounded to the nearest hundredths is 50.35
________________________________________________________________
5. Flor’s pet cat weighed 5.4728 kg. Her pet cat weighs 5.473 if the weight is
rounded to the nearest thousandths?
