Brief Introduction

Preserved food like canned goods, processed meat and dried fish are in demand depending
on the needs and situation of the consumers. Food can spoil easily especially if not properly stored.
To make its life longer, we must apply food preservation techniques. There are different ways to
preserve food, these procedures or ways will be taken up in this lesson.

4
Different Ways of Preserving Food
1. Drying- This is done by exposing the food under the heat of
the sun to eliminate its liquid content.

2. Cooling/Freezing- Meat, fish, eggs, and vegetables are kept in

a cooler in the refrigerator where the low temperature can
maintain their freshness.

3. Adding Preservatives- This process or preserving prevents the

growth of microbes in the food. Examples are vinegar, sugar,
salt and salitre.

4. Fermentation- Completed by soaking or saturating the food in

an adequate amount of salt to prevent it from spoiling and
improve its flavor.

5. Smoking- Food is exposed near the fire and smoke until it is

cooked.

6. Boiling/Sterilizing- Food in this process usually boiled or

sterilized in the bottle to kill off microscopic organisms. Most
dangerous bacteria are destroyed at a temperature of 50 °C to
60 °C.

7. Canning- Preserving food sealed in cans such as milk, fish,

meat and fruits.

Possible answer
Food preservation methods are important because these methods prevent the growth of
microbes in the food and prevents the food spoilage.
For them to apply or use in their daily lives.
I will keep the vegetables in a cooler of refrigerator to maintain their freshness.
I can use different ways of food preservation to preserve the extra fish at home like
adding preservatives, drying and smoking. I can add preservatives like salt. I can also dry
the fish by exposing them under the heat of the sun or place them near the fire and smoke
until they are cooked.
We can prevent the growth of microbes in the food being preserved by adding
preservatives like salt, vinegar, sugar and salitre. We can apply all the ways or methods in
preserving food to prevent the growth of microbes in the food.
