HOW TO USE THIS MODULE?

Before you start with this module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will
disturb you while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to
successfully enjoy the objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the instructions indicated in every page of this

LESSON
12
Describing Set of Integers

EXPECTATIONS

You will describe set of integers and identify real-life situations that make use of it.
Specifically, this module will help you to:
• represent a given situation or event by an integer;
• identify negative and positive integers; and
• apply integers to real-life situations.

Pre-test

Read the questions carefully. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. Which situation could the integer -50 represent?

A. An increase of Php50 in a bank account

B. The temperature on a warm day
C. The distance driven on the way to the beach
D. A decrease of 50 employees
2. Which situation could the integer +500 represent?
A. An increase of Php500 in a bank account
B. The temperature on a warm day
C. The distance driven on the way to the beach
D. A decrease of 500 employees
3. Ronald, the diver, is 10 feet below sea level.

Hint: She did not gain or lose weight. Her weight remained the same.
A. 5 pounds B. -5 pounds C. 0 pounds D. none of these

Lesson 1: Describe the set of integers and identify

real-life situations that make use of it.

Looking Back to Your Lesson

In this lesson, we will study about integers - what they are and what
differentiates them from other types of numbers.

Review: Tell the integer encircled in the following number line.

1.

2.

3.

Brief Introduction:
There are many uses of integers in our daily life such as helping in the computation
of the efficiency in positive or negative numbers in almost every field. In addition, they
help to see the location where one is standing. And most importantly, it helps to
compute how more or fewer measures to be taken for achieving better results.
Integer is a Latin word that means whole. An integer may include a set of whole
numbers such as zero, positive number and negative number. Integers, do not
include decimals, percents, and fractions.
Positive Numbers
These are numbers that have a plus (+) sign on them. We can see these numbers
on the right of zero (0). Usually, a number without any sign is also considered a positive
number.

4
Mathematics 6

Source: Wikipedia
Negative Numbers
A negative number is the opposite of a positive number. It is written with a (-) sign.
Negative numbers can be seen on the left of a zero on a number line.
Zero
A number that is neither positive nor negative. It can be seen at the center of the
number line and is a neutral number.
Remember these:
✓ Every positive number is greater than its negative counterpart and zero.
Example, 6 is greater than -6.
✓ Every negative number is less than its positive counterparts.
Example, -8 is less than8.
https://www.toppr.com/guides/maths/integers/basics-of-integers/

All positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero can be put on number line.
The following is a number line showing integers from -11 to 11. However, the
arrows at both ends show that the numbers do not stop after 11 or -11 but the pattern
continues.

Opposite numbers are located at the same distance from zero.

For instance, 3 and -3 are opposites numbers because they are both 3 units away
from zero.
3 units on the right of
zero

3 units on the left of

zero

5
Mathematics 6

The same with 45 and -45 are opposites.

Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero. It is often misunderstood by
many. Always remember it as a distance.

For example, the absolute value of 4 is 4 because the distance from 0 to 4 is 4.

The absolute value of -7 is 7 because the distance from 0 to -7 is 7.

Usually, we use the following notation: |4| and |-7|.

|4| is read " the absolute value of 4 "

|-7| is read " the absolute value of -7 "

So, |4|= 4 and |-7|= 7

Notice that the absolute value of a number is always positive.
Integers are used to represent situations that whole numbers cannot represent
mathematically. The following real-life situations make use of integers:
• Depositing money to a savings account – Positive Integer
• Withdrawing money from a savings account – Negative Integer
• Wins when playing basketball – Positive Integer
• Losses when playing basketball – Negative Integer
In basketball, for example, a win of 10 games on the first play can be written as
+10 games or just 10. However, a lost of 6 yards on the second play can be written as
-6.

Activity #1

Give the opposite of the following situation.

1. A loss of 10 points
2. A gain of 4 points

2. 5 7. -12
3. 35 8. 60

5. -8 10. -I100I

Remember
An integer may comprise a set of whole numbers that include zero,
positive number and negative number.
The numbers which have a plus (+) sign on them are called positive
numbers. These numbers are present on the right of zero or above zero (0).
A negative number is a contradiction of a positive number. It is written
with a (-) sign. Negative numbers are present on the left of zero or below zero
(0) on a number line
A number that neither a positive nor a negative is a zero.

Sunday’s Best
It was Sunday, so Cherry’s family went to church. After spending few hours
in the church, they decided to bond together and went to the mall. When they reached
the mall, their father decided to withdraw Ᵽ5, 000.00 to be spent for his family.
Afterwards, they rode the elevator and went up to the 3 rd floor to visit the department
store and buy new children’s clothes. Finally, they ate at Kenzo’s favourite fast food
chain, and then went home. Cherry and his little brother, Kenzo, were joyful for having
their Sunday well spent.

Directions: Read each question carefully then write the answer in the space provided.
1. Where did Cherry’s family go before the mall?
2. How much did their father withdraw to be spent for the whole family?
3. In what floor of the mall is the department store located?
4. How is the expression “went up to the 3rd floor” expressed as an integer?
5. Is the statement “withdraw Ᵽ5, 000.00” a positive or a negative when expressed
as an integer?
