Numbers!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

LESSON

In the past lesson, you have learned about sets and its subsets. We will use
the word subset to summarize the next lesson. In this lesson, we are going to learn
about the subsets of real numbers and how to arrange real numbers in increasing
or decreasing order in a number line.

To start the lesson, let us analyze first this word problem.

Dhonabelle receives their


monthly electric bill with the total of
Php 6,525.00. She goes to the market to

buy 2 4 kg of beef that costs Php 825.00
and 1.5 kg of brocolli that costs Php
450. If her budget for the electricity and
the food that she bought is Php
8,000.00, how much money does she
have left?
Counting comes in our daily lives naturally. Dhonabelle, for instance,

encountered 6,525, 2 4, 825, 1.5, 450, and 8,000. Grouping these numbers is helpful
in mathematics because it allows us to identify exactly what numbers are we dealing

with. All numbers that you know such as 1, -9, 0, √5, , etc. are all Real Numbers.

These numbers are grouped and called the subsets of Real Numbers.

Subsets of Real Numbers

Arranging Real Numbers in Increasing or Decreasing Order

Negative Numbers Zero Positive Numbers

When using the number line, negative numbers can be found on the left side,
zero at the center, then positive numbers on the right side. When the number is going
on the farther left side, its value decreases. For example, -5 is less than -1. When the
number is going on the farther right side, its value increases. For example, 6 is
greater than 2.

Example 1: Compare the given numbers and plot these on the number line. Arrange
it in increasing and decreasing order.

A. -1 and -4 (-1 is greater than -4 or -4 is less than -1)


B. 0 and -6 ( 0 is greater than -6 or -6 is less than 0)
C. 1 and 7 ( 7 is greater than 1 or 1 is less than 7)

Now let’s try to arrange the following real numbers -1, -4, 0, -6, 1, 7.
Increasing order: -6, -4, -1, 0, 1, 7

fractions into decimal representation.

There are different subsets of real numbers.


• Natural numbers are also known as counting numbers {1, 2, 3, …}
• Whole numbers are natural numbers with 0 {0, 1, 2, 3, …}
• Integers are whole numbers with negative numbers {…, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, …}

• Rational numbers are any number that can be expressed in the form 𝑏 , where
a and b are integers and b ≠ 0. They are fractions that are terminating and
repeating.
• Irrational numbers are numbers that when you express in decimal
representation, they are non-repeating and non-terminating.
• The farther the negative number to zero, the lower the value. The farther the
positive number to zero, the higher the value.

Real numbers are the union of all rational and irrational numbers.
Same with our experiences in life. Our lives consist of our rational and irrational
decisions. Sometimes we make mistakes but that doesn’t mean that we are a bad
person. On a separate sheet of paper, give one irrational decision that you made and
the reason why you made it. Then try to come up with a rational decision that you
think that would make that irrational decision right.
