This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:
This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.

LESSON
In this self-learning lesson, we will study on how to estimate the square root
of a whole number to the nearest hundredth and to plot irrational numbers on a
number line.
On the previous lesson, we learned already how to solve for the principal root
of a given number if it is a perfect square. However, if a number is not a perfect
square how are we going to solve for its square root?
Lance is doing his homework in Math. He was able
Homework:
to answer the first 4 of his homework but he cannot Find the principal
answer the last item. He tried to use his list of first 20 root of the following
whole numbers:
perfect squares but still he cannot find a whole number
1. √49 = 7
than when multiplied to itself will give a product of 18. 2. √81 = 9
3. √169 = 13
12 = 1 62= 36 112 = 121 162= 256 4. −√25 = –5
22= 4 72= 49 122= 144 172= 289 5. √18 = ????
The square root of positive perfect square always gives a result of rational
numbers. For example, √49 = 7, √81 = 9, √169 = 13, and - √25 = -5 thus 7, 9, 13
and -5 are rational numbers.
Suppose you are asked for the √18 , how are you going to solve without the
use of calculator, since it cannot be found on the list of perfect squares? This can be
solve by estimation.
Example 1:
Estimate √18 and approximate its location on the number line.
Solution:
First, using the list of perfect squares, look for the two consecutive integers
between which √18 lies.
12 = 1 62= 36 112 = 121 162= 256
22= 4 72= 49 122= 144 172= 289
3=9
2 8 = 64
2 13 = 169
2 182= 324
42= 16 92= 81 142= 196 192= 361
18
52= 25 102= 100 152= 225 202= 400
Since 18 is between 16 and 25, so √18 must be between √16 and √25. In that
case, using a number line, we can say that the √18 lies between 4 and 5 as shown
on the figure below.
√𝟏𝟖
0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Considering 18 is closer to 16 than 25, we can say that its square root is nearer to 4
than 5, then we can now start estimating:
(4.1)2 = 16.81
(4.2)2 = 17.64
(4.3)2 = 18.49
Based on the result, we can say that √18 lies between 4.2 and 4.3.
Continuing the estimation process to get the result of up hundredths place,
we have:
(4.21)2 = 17.72
(4.22)2 = 17.8084
(4.23)2 = 17.8929
(4.24)2 = 17.9776
(4.25)2 = 18.0625
Therefore, √18 lies between 4.24 and 4.25 and we can say that √18 ≈ 4.24
It can be plotted on a number line as shown below.
√𝟏𝟖
0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Example 2:
Estimate and plot the value of √77.
Solution
By investigation: √77 lies between √64 and √81
Since, √𝟔𝟒 < √𝟕𝟕 < √𝟖𝟏
Therefore 8 < √𝟕𝟕 < 9
Therefore, √77 lies between 8.77 and 8.78 and we can say that √77 ≈ 8.77
It can be plotted on a number line as shown below.
√𝟕𝟕
5 6 7 8 9 10
Remember that, if the number is a nonperfect square then its principal root
is an irrational number such as √18 and √77 . Square roots of irrational numbers
can be estimated from the values between which the square root lies
