CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Project Context

In the fruit and vegetable industry in the Philippines, Hi-Las Marketing

Corporation is a pioneer. Roberto C. Amores founded the company in 1976. His passion

for the Philippine Super Mango propelled it from a local trader of fruits and vegetables to

one of the country's highly diversified growers, exporters, and processors, supported by

more than 30 years of experience and a group of satisfied international customer-partners

in Japan, Korea, the United States, China, the Netherlands, Germany, the United

Kingdom, and Hong Kong. Hi-Las' Philippine Super mangoes go through a lot of steps

from the tree to the table to keep their natural high-nutrition, high-flavor qualities and to

make sure they are safe to eat. Hi-Las established its own production farm and a

dedicated, modern packing facility, supported by a cold chain post-harvest system, in

order to address the issue of supplying its major Japanese customers with dependable

export-quality fresh okra at a seasonable price. The 2.5-hectare Nucleus Farm is GAP-

certified for producing fresh okra. Contract grower ship agreements with a network of

trained okra farmers who are accredited to adhere to Good Agricultural Practices and the

use of acceptable chemicals and farm inputs further complement the model farm.

Hi-Las Marketing Corporation also owns a factory in Barangay Sierra, La Paz,

Tarlac. This is the main process of okra processing to be exported to other countries such

as Japan and Korea. One of the problems here is the old-fashioned (manual attendance

system) process of attendance check. What the company uses to verify the attendance of
workers is an attendance sheets that is only left outside and can mislead the attendance of

their workers. Another problem is the long-term control of each worker's attendance.

Buddy-punching and time theft plagues manual attendance systems. It is simple to

alter the data because it is entered manually. In order to make extra money, the employee

might provide incorrect information, which could reduce productivity and drive up costs.

While taking into account their compensation, compliance, and other factors, it is

necessary to compile employee attendance data. However, there is a greater chance of

human error when these tasks are carried out by hand. The process of manually recording

attendance takes a lot of time. Performance and productivity may suffer as a result.

Additionally, it will take time to manually collect attendance data for all of your

employees. In addition, you might end up spending a lot of time maintaining scorecards

and correcting time entry errors, among other things.

Businesses benefit from biometric attendance systems in a number of ways,

including accurate time and attendance tracking, increased security, and staff

productivity. It can be used to maintain better attendance controls, lowering payroll costs

for businesses; In addition, biometric attendance systems can provide you with real-time

data to assist you in making educated decisions regarding personnel. It is a

straightforward and fruitful strategy for boosting your business's bottom line. Keep in

mind the features that are most important to you as well as your company's requirements

when making your choice.

1.2 Purpose and Descriptions

The purpose of this study is to support biometric systems that can automate time and

the presence process, thus reducing the manual paperwork that is often needed to pay an

employee. In addition, biometric systems can remove errors from the list of wages caused

by illegible writing, as well as other types of time theft that can cost a lot of money for

the business.

The company no longer needs a manual attendance sheet, allowing workers to focus

more on completing the task. Systems that monitor workers' presence in the workplace

through biometrics provide more detailed information. This makes departments such as

finance and operations more productive. The effectiveness of HR and payroll

departments is enhanced by the ability to track employees' presence more accurately and

automatically

1.3 Objectives

This study aims to provide a much higher level of safety than traditional methods

of attendance and time because physical characteristics are unique to each individual.

Biometric support systems also eliminate the need for time cards and identification cards,

which are easy to lose or steal. To improve data security and prevent theft, biometric

presence systems may also be used to control access security. If access control is

integrated with biometric time and usage, the system can manage the security of both

your company and the entire building by controlling access to employees. A safer

environment is possible as a result of the application of this method.

The study expects to accomplish the objectives listed below:

 The system will provide access to dependable and accurate data.

 Accurate time keeping and mistake reduction are both benefits of the

system.

 The system will make it simple to manage absences and vacation time.

1.4 Scope and Limitation

This research looked into how Hi-Las Marketing Company in Barangay Sierra, La

Paz, Tarlac, used a biometric attendance system so that workers could track their

attendance for correct information like an authentication and security identification

tool. These devices use automated methods to verify or recognize a genuine person's

identification based on a physical characteristic or behavioral characteristic. Voice,

face, and fingerprint recognition are some of these characteristics.

Biometric characteristics cannot be reissued or cancelled, unlike passwords or ID

tokens, which are another limitation of biometric systems. It may be extremely

difficult, if not impossible; to alter a person's fingerprint or any other physiological

biometric that has been compromised. When that biometric property is going to be

used for authentication in the future, this might be a problem. There is a long line of

workers waiting to be enrolled in large companies because some biometric devices

require more time than is normally required. In these circumstances, daily biometric

device scanning is difficult for individuals. Some individuals do not have the

opportunity to participate in the enrollment process. Fingers or eyes, for example,

may have been damaged or lost.
