 The Battle of Marawi, also known as the Siege of Marawi, was a five-month-long armed
battle in Marawi, Philippines, that began on May 23, 2017 and ended on October 23, 2017.
Armed members from two ISIL-affiliated organizations – Abu Sayyaf and the Maute – battled
with government authorities. When the military attempted to apprehend top ISIL leader
Isnilon Hapilon, the siege began. As a result, assailants retaliated, calling the city a new ISIL
caliphate, or Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, better known as ISIS.
