Essential Question:
Can a system of linear equations have
no solution or infinitely many  Determine the numbers of solutions of linear
solutions? systems.
 Use linear systems to solve real-life problems

Solutions of System of Linear Equations:

A system of linear equations can have one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions.

Example 1: Solving a System: No Solution

Solve the system of linear equations by graphing and substitution

{ y=2
y=2 x +1
x−5
Example 2: Solving a System: Infinitely Many Solutions
Solve the system of linear equations by graphing and elimination.

{−4−2xx++2y=3
y=6

Check: Solve the system of linear equations by any method.

1. {2 xx ++2y =3
y=6
2. {2y=−x +3
x +2 y=4
3. {x+2
x+ y=3
y=4

Example 3: Modeling with Mathematics

The perimeter of the trapezoidal piece of land is 48 kilometers.

The perimeter of the rectangular piece of land is 144 kilometers.
