OPENING PRAYER
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Lord, I know you are with me and love me. Give me peace of mind as I prepare for this time
of study. Help me to focus on my books and notes, keep me from all distractions so that I will make
the best use of this time that is available to me. Give me insight that I might understand what I am
studying, and help me to remember it when time comes. Above all, I thank you for the ability to be
able to study and for the many gifts and talents you have given me. Help me always to use them in
such a way that they honor you and do justice to myself. Amen.
- A Salesian Prayer
INTRODUCTION:
Most real-world scenarios follow the concept of linear equations. Understanding this concept
enables us to make easy computations and correct decisions.
Linear equations use one or more variables where one variable is dependent on the other.
Almost any situation where there is an unknown quantity can be represented by a linear equation,
like figuring out income over time, calculating mileage rates or predicting profit. Many people use
linear equations every day, even if they do the calculations in their head.
a. Learning Objectives
Students will be able to….
 solve systems of linear equations by substitution and elimination.
 differentiate linear inequalities in two variables from linear equations in two
variable. M8AL-IIa-2
b. Enduring Understanding
The students will understand that unknown quantities in geometric problems can be
determined by using patterns of factors.
c. Essential Question
 Why do we need to use patterns in solving?
 How do you see the world as a geometric figure full of pattern?
d. Instruction for Parents

Continue monitoring the activities of your child, please always set yourself free if your
child have questions, for you to help your child understand the things that is hard for them.
Just always note that answers should be taken from the child and not from parents. If you
have questions, please message me via messenger or through my contact number given at the
last page of this learning package.

LESSON PROPER
Day 1: “Solving Systems of Linear Equation by Substitution Method”
a. Presentation:
The substitution method is mainly done by substituting the equivalent expression of one
variable derived from one equation into the same variable of the other equation.
Example 1: Solve the system of linear equation by substitution.
Eq1. 7 x  2 y  7
Eq2. 4 x  y  4
Solution: Of the two equations, the second has a variable with 1 as numerical coefficient. Solve
this equation for y.

Eq2. 4 x  y  4 Eq1. 7 x  2 y  7
7 x  2( 4 x  4)  7
 y  4 x  4 7 x  8x  8  7
 1[  y  4 x  4]
Substitute 4x-4 for y 7 x  8x  7  8
in Eq1. and solve for x.
y  4x  4 15 x 15

15 15
x 1
Finally substitute x=1 in Eq3. to solve for y.
Eq3. y  4 x  4
y  4(1)  4
y  44 Therefore, the solution to the system is (1, 0).
y0

b. Activity: Determine the solution of the following systems of linear equation using substitution
method. Show your solution.

1. Eq1. x  3 y  8
Eq2. 2 x  2 y  8

Day 2: “Solving Systems of Linear Equation by Elimination Method”

a. Presentation:
Another method in solving systems of linear equations is the elimination method. To
eliminate the chosen variable, the numerical coefficients of its terms should be in their additive
inverses. If the coefficients are not yet in their additive inverses, make use of the concept of least
common multiple and multiplication property of equality.
Example 1: Solve the system of linear equation by elimination.
Eq1. 3x  4 y  12
Eq2. 2 x  4 y  3
Solution: Note that the coefficients of y in both equations are numerically equal but opposite
in sign. This variable can be eliminated by addition.
5 x  15
3 x  4 y  12
+ 5 x 15
2x  4 y  3 Solve for x. 
5 5
5x  15 x3

Finally, solve for the value of the other variable by substituting x = 3 in any of the given
equations.
4 y  3
2x  4 y  3
4y 3 Therefore, the solution to the
2(3)  4 y  3  −3
6  4y  3 4 4 system is 3, 4
4y  3 6 3
y

b. Activity: Determine the solution of the following systems of linear equation using
elimination method. Show your solution.
1. Eq1. 2 x  5 y  8 2. Eq1. 8 x  y  11
Eq2. 3x  5 y  5 Eq2. 7 x  2 y  4

Day 3: “Quadratic Inequalities”

a. Presentation:
In mathematics, values are not just related by an equation. For example, the height of
Greg Slaughter is greater than the height of Jun Mar Fajardo. We know that this example is true,
and that saying Greg Slaughter has the same height or less height than June Mar Fajardo is
definitely false.
For more information and examples, read and understand the concept of quadratic
inequalities in your textbook, page 164 - 166.

Examples: Linear inequality in two variables Linear equation in two variables

1. 2 x  3 y  30 1. 2 x  5 y  16
2. 5 x  6 y  25 2. x  4 y  17
b. Activity: Differentiate linear inequality and linear equation in two variables, and give at least
two examples of linear inequality and linear equation in two variables.

b. Social Orientation: Individual Differences
Each of us are unique, there may be things that we have in common but we still differ
from each other. But despite this differences, we are still equal in the eyes of God, for we
are all his son and we are created in His image and likeness.
