Solving Proportion

using scale drawing

Topic: Scale Drawing and Proportion

Ms. Anh
Math 7
Learning objectives:

By the end of the unit, students will be able to identify a proportional situation and compare
with the not-proportional situation. Students also should be able to calculate the unit rate
and find real-life lengths and areas by using scale drawing information.

Content Standards:
7.RP.A.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions,
including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured
in like or different units.
7.RP.A.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationship
between quantities.
7.G.A.1 Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric
figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a
scale drawing at a different scale.

Math Talks

You are helping

your family to
renovate the front
yard.

If you want to
replace mulch in
each of the three
garden bed, how
much area will you
need to cover with
mulch?
How do I solve it?

Step 1: write the quantities in

fraction form. (or we call it
“ratio”

Step 2: divide the top &

bottom by the denominator
→ so the bottom number
becomes 1.

Step 3: answer the question,

the number 1 in the bottom is
also called as “per.”
Which one should I buy?

Hint:
Compare the unit rates.
How much is per oz?

Now, let’s take a minute, go ahead

and try it yourselves first.
Which one should I buy?

Check your answer:

I should buy the 48 oz

because the unit price is
cheaper than the 16 oz.

$0.21 is cheaper than $0.31.

Proportional
Relationships

- Equations
- Tables
- Graphs

In a proportional relationship, the

constant of proportionality, also
known as the unit rate, in the ratio
of y to x (y divided by x)
The constant of
proportionality, is called k
y= 4x k= 4 K = y x
y= 6x k=6
Or you will plug in the x and y
value to find k in a table.

An example of table will

look like this
y= 4x y= 6x

x 0 1 2 3 4 x 0 1 2 3 4

y 0 4 8 12 16 y 0 6 12 18 24
Now you try to find the
constant of proportionality
from these tables
x 2 4 6 10 x 12 16 20 28

y 30 60 90 150 y 3 4 5 7

x 3 4 6 7 x 8 12 16 20

y 18 24 36 42 y 6 9 12 15

Hint:
- What math operation to you use to
find the constant of proportionality k?
Check your answers
x 2 4 6 10 x 12 16 20 28

y 30 60 90 150 y 3 4 5 7

k= y/x = 30/2 = 15 k= y/x = 3/12 = 1/4

x 3 4 6 7 x 8 12 16 20

y 18 24 36 42 y 6 9 12 15

k= y/x = 18/3 = 6 k= y/x = 6/8 = 3/4

Solving Proportion
To solve a proportion, you use cross-multiply and inverse operations.

We also call it
“butterfly method.”
Now you try these:
