BASIC CONSTRUCTION IN GEOMETRY

Construction #1
Constructing Congruent Segments
Objective: To construct a segment congruent to a given segment.
Materials needed: pencil, ruler, compass, short bond paper and ballpen (for final outline)

Construct a segment congruent to a given

segment.
A B
Given: AB
̅̅̅̅

Construct: We will construct CD

̅̅̅̅ so that we
can show AB ̅̅̅̅.
̅̅̅̅ ≅ CD

Step 1: Draw a ray with endpoint C. C

Step 2: Open the compass to the length of

̅̅̅̅
AB.

A B

Step 3: With the same compass setting, put

the compass point on point C. Draw an arc
that intersects the ray. Label the point of
intersection D.

Step 4: Using a ruler measure the length of A B

segment ̅̅̅̅
AB and ̅̅̅̅
CD, this will show that the ̅̅̅̅ = 11 cm
AB
two segments are congruent.
C D
̅̅̅̅ = 11 cm
CD

Therefore, ̅̅̅̅ CD.

AB ≅ ̅̅̅̅

construct: https://youtu.be/KUtwbmx0LV0
Construction #1 (Students’ task):

Following the steps provided above, construct congruent segments. Use a ruler to draw EF
̅̅̅̅.
Then construct XY
̅̅̅̅ so that we can show EF ̅̅̅̅.
̅̅̅̅ ≅ XY

Do it on short bond paper and take a picture of it. After that, submit the picture thru pm.
Reflection Time: Reflect on your own output by answering the following questions in three (3)
sentences.
1) Do you find it hard to finish the task? Why?
2) What have you learned after doing the task?
