Introduction
The NOMAD™ 30 Pocket Reader is a PIV-certified, FAP 30 single fingerprint capture device

Using the NOMAD 30 Pocket Reader
After it is connected to a mobile device or computer and receiving power, the NOMAD 30
Pocket Reader provides visible and haptic cues for ease of use.
When the NOMAD is ready to capture a fingerprint, blue LED lights illuminate on both sides
of the sensor (referred to as “landing lights” – see Figure 2).
During a capture, the LED lights turn off and the device vibrates briefly when the fingerprint
image quality is good (typically 1 to 2 seconds). Note: The vibration feature is not active when
used with iOS devices.

Tips for capturing fingerprints

A subject’s finger must be touching the bezel of the NOMAD 30 Pocket Reader in order for a
fingerprint image to be captured (see bezel area in Figure 2).
Make sure that subjects touch the sensor with the pad of their finger, not the tip. The most
details (minutiae) occur about midway between the first joint and the tip of the finger.
Good ergonomics in the positioning of the fingerprint reader can significantly improve the
quality of fingerprint scans. Be sure that the reader is positioned in a way that is convenient
for subjects to touch properly, such that the large area of the pad of the finger is captured.

Capture a fingerprint
1. To capture a fingerprint, have the subject place the pad of the finger on the sensor using
light pressure. Note: Pressing too hard can potentially damage the sensor.
2. Make sure the finger is touching the bezel and have the subject hold the finger in place
until the landing lights turn off and the reader vibrates (if applicable), indicating that the
print was captured.

Troubleshooting
• Fingerprint image is too light - An image that is too light can occur when a finger is very
dry. To remedy this, have the subject apply moisturizer. If moisturizer is not available,
have the subject touch the forehead in case enough natural oil is present on the skin.

• Fingerprint image is too dark - An image that is too dark can occur when a finger is wet or
excess oil is present. To remedy this, have the subject wash hands with soap to remove
excess oil and then dry thoroughly.

Power management
When a smartphone, tablet, or laptop is powered on or in sleep mode, a connected NOMAD
30 Pocket Reader can draw a small amount of power from it. When the NOMAD is not in use,
you should always disconnect it from the smartphone, tablet, or laptop to preserve battery
life.

Safety and handling

To prevent the sensor from scratches or other damage, always keep the NOMAD in a
protective case or covering when not in use.

If you need to remove the NOMAD from the case, disconnect the
cable and then push up from the bottom of the case when possible.

To finish removing it from the case, grip the device

from the sides only.

Important! Do not touch or squeeze the sensor

when removing the NOMAD from or returning it to
a case.

Cleaning and sanitizing

The NOMAD 30 Pocket Reader sensor can be cleaned gently with a microfiber cloth.
You can sanitize the NOMAD using alcohol pads with 60% to 80% alcohol or by using a
disinfecting wipe.
Instructions for using a disinfectant
1. If using a disinfecting wipe, wipe the surface of the platen and other parts of the device.
You can also apply a disinfectant to a microfiber cloth and then use the cloth to wipe the
platen and device.
Important! Do not spray liquids directly onto a device or sensor.
2. Allow the disinfectant to stand for the allotted time recommended by the manufacturer.
For example, the recommended wait time is 4 minutes when using a Clorox Disinfecting
Wipe.
3. Clean any excess moisture from the NOMAD using a dry, soft microfiber cloth.
