Trends, Networks, and Critical Thinking Skills in the 21st Century
How to Train your Dragon made an impact since the main character himself is made up of a
personality that each individual can relate his/her own life. Hiccup, the main character of the movie,
used the following 21st century skills in order to be an inspiration to others who watched the movie:

1.) Being Human Together

- Hiccup used his ability to interact with dragons which allowed him to be a friend of
Toothless the night fury dragon which his community had really tight time to deal with in the
past. Using this skill, Hiccup grew closer to this dragon which made him form a relationship
of genuine friendship with the dragon. This ability also allowed Hiccup to make his
community realize that dragons can be a friend and that they should stop killing them in the
future just because of their misconceptions and tradition.
2.) Creating and Deriving Meaning
- Hiccup used this skill when he tried to understand the reasons why dragons continuously
attack their community and realize the fact on why Toothless is hesitant to be friends with
him. With the use of this skill, Hiccup was able to recognize that dragons attack them since
they were also defending themselves from his community. Hiccup tried to understand
dragons which enabled him to make him and his Vikings community accept dragons as their
own friend and part of the community.
3.) Pattern Recognition
- This skill was used by Hiccup when he tried to identify why Toothless was not able to fly.
He recognized that the wings of Toothless was not complete which allowed him to decide if
he will help him fly again as a dragon. This skill made him accomplish his task to make an
alternative wing in order for Toothless to fly.
4.) Critical and Creative Thinking
- This skill works hand in hand with Pattern Recognition as a skill of Hiccup since he was
able to discover something in him before venturing out in training Toothless to be his friend.
He tried to understand what his personality is in order to understand the people surrounding
him such as the Vikings community and the dragons themselves.
5.) Contextualizing
- Hiccup continuously persevered in teaching Toothless that he will not hurt him and he
can be friend. Hiccup adapted to the situation by empathizing towards the feeling of
Toothless in the woods. This 21st century skill of Hiccup became the reason why they
became closer to each other and made Toothless realized that a Viking such as Hiccup is not
an enemy but a friend. Hiccup adjusted to what is being felt by Toothless in order to build
and form a relationship with him even though Toothless is considered an enemy of the
culture of Vikings. However, as the story goes, the Vikings realized that dragons should not
be considered as enemies but rather friends of their community that should be given
importance and love.
