Public space helps determine the relationship between people and their

surroundings. Every human being are meant to become socialize and a public

space is significant to factors that affects this characteristics of the

individuals.Road should be a part of a public space but because of the

congestion, it swallows the spaces meant for the public little by little. With this,

there are several people were stood to stop this road suppression and to give

their city a healthy community where the road and public space should be

balance. One of these people is Jeff Speck, a city planner, writer and

lecturer.the pictures below were taken during his speech in TED Talks and his

Speech entitled “The Walkable City” has a great impact on my project. His

first video was about on the problems and impacts of walkable streets and

ideal road.

I realized that this problem in transportation affects even the 1 st world countries,

what more in the Philippines where the income are almost sufficient only in food and

other bills. This says that poor transportation will cost much for us.
He stated here the strategy they did to solve their problem. He said that when most

cities are widening their roads, they did a contrary where they skinny a streets and

add lanes for bicycles and walkways. Which is a big help because for example, here

in Dasmarinas where my project locates, I always see people commuting a walk-in

distance destinations because it has no healthy walkways for pedestrians. With this,

they saved money but still built a functional infrastructure that benefits more

individuals. It also promotes a less carbon-emission vehicles like bicycles as it has its

own lane without congestion that promotes people to cycling.

Here he talks about the improper urban design that affects the health of the

community. He said that most of the people who are obese are live in a less walkable

neighborhood where have lots of time to sit up to to hours resulting to slowing down

of metabolism and gaining weight which reflects the health status of a person based

on the data given by the study called “gluttony versus sloth” in Britain. Which is

pretty relatable on my project where most of the Filipinos doesn’t have time or

money to spend for their self fitness activities and walking is the most suitable

activities for them without spending much money and by having walkable streets will

help encourage them to walk often.

His last part of his speech was about on how we design our city if it is around cars or

around people. Because most of the cities around the globe were designed around

cars resulting to accident prone areas and with asthma effects on our health. Most of
the road in the Philippines were designed to solve road traffic problems but not

considering the other factors that might affect the living around it. This video shows

the importance of the walkable streets and a proper road design that might help on

my project.

The second video explains on how he achieved his insight about the walkable city

entitled “ 4 Ways to Make a City More Walkable”.For him, walkable city is a city

which the car is an optional instrument for freedom rather than a prosthetic device.

He gave 2 types of zoning: First is the traditional zoning (first picture) and the Sub

urban sprawl (second picture). the first picture combines different types and use of a

building, it has a diversity where places to live, shops, recreate, get educated etc. are

all in there. While the second is the urbanization where places only to live. This

speaks the important of zoning to achieve the walkable city as it must be walk in

distances between shops, institutions and others.

Sub-urban sprawl affects the road as it requires transport vehicles going from place

to place. The two pictures show the effects of zoning in both road and

neighborhood. If the needs of the people are nearby then they will walk instead to

take a vehicle resulting to road congestion.because if the city was designed for the

cars then the city would not become a walkable city. The dasmarinas is an example

of urban sprawl, lots of subdivisions emerged and most of the land area consumed

by the horizontal housing projects resulting to inadequate zone for infrastructures,

institutional and business district.

Safety is also one of the factors need to consider in designing a walkable city. The

wider the block the wider the road would become and it will be risky to cross on a

multi lane road that is why we need to study the block size of the community. The

misconception of the road traffic is that they believe that road widening is the best

solution to ease the traffic problems but if the road widening without proper

planning will become worse over the years as it widen the roads only and the

vehicles still filling the spaces of the road within years as it does not have an equal

considerations for both pedestrians and drivers.

The pictures show the design of a walkable road where it designates the function of

the road, from the cars to the pedestrians, barriers, curbs, onsite parking and bike

lanes. These spots are all important to have an effective healthy connections inside

the city. Proper planning and design will lead to comfortability of each others. Having

said saving money and less time consuming transportation will be beneficial to us.

Considering these videos and applying it to my project will surely have a positive

outcome eventually.

These two photos shows the project of Meleca Architects. It is in Columbus, Ohio

where the left is in convention center while on the left is a blocks of business

struggling despite being near the convention where numbers of people are visiting.

After the redesigning of the bridge, lots of pedestrians are crossing the bridge going

to the business blocks and this proves that a place will attract people if it design and

planned properly.
