Welcome back to school, Louisian Gems! I hope you are ready to enrich your mind for another
school year. Another school year means another load of learnings but knowledge is not the only thing
you can acquire in school but also personal development/values. So, for this week you will learn how to
prepare yourself for another year of learning because just how you value knowledge should also be the
same in valuing yourself.

Valuing yourself should start first by having self-awareness. “Knowing oneself is the beginning of
wisdom”. This renowned quote is often attributed to Socrates. But what exactly do you benefit when you
know and understand who you are? When you have self-knowledge, you understand your strengths and
weaknesses, your passions and fears, your life’s desires and dreams. This means you are aware of your
eccentricities (peculiarities) and idiosyncrasies (habits), likes and dislikes, tolerance and limitations. You
know your purpose in life (Doherty, 2017). Also, Meg Selig (2016) suggests that when you know who you
are, you develop understanding of yourself, you would be happier because you can express who you are.
You develop less inner conflict, make better decision and better choices about everything and
understands what motivates you. Subsequently, she emphasized that when you know yourself better,
you have the resistance to social pressure, you are grounded in your values and preferences and less
likely to say “yes” when you want to say “no” and at the same time you develop tolerance and
understanding of others. You can easily help and empathize with others.

And since our topic for this week is very essential, why don’t we start to learn how to practice
self-awareness?

Learning to be self-aware isn’t easy, even for adults. But, if you really value yourself and always allow
room for self-development, you can definitely achieve this.

To be self-aware you must…

 First, identify your emotions.

 You need to be able to identify your feelings. Learning the difference between frustration
and anger will help you navigate your emotions. By recognizing the link between your
feelings, thoughts, and actions, you can then address these feelings and react to them
appropriately.
 Take some time to notice your emotional responses and consider what might be behind
them, whether values, memories or experiences. Also consider what results in positive
emotions and what is more negative. Remember, you can change how you feel.

~Anybody can become angry - that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right
degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within
everybody's power and is not easy.  - Aristotle

 Second, see yourself honestly.

 Looking at yourself honestly can help you respond to compliments, feedback, and
criticism openly and earnestly. This sense of self will teach you to see and acknowledge
both the positive and negative things in your nature.
 you have to be willing to recognize reality for what it is before you can change it. When
you are dishonest, you only choose to see what you want to see, but you ignore what you
don’t want to see. This may provide short-term happiness or relief, but in the long-run
it’s unhealthy and destructive.

 Being honest with yourself can sometimes be painful, but it’s a necessary component to
long-term happiness and success in our lives.

~What I know for sure is this: The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal for
this year is, you can get there - as long as you're willing to be honest with yourself about the
preparation and work involved. There are no back doors, no free rides. There's just you, this moment,
and a choice. -Oprah Winfrey

 Third, recognize your strengths and weaknesses.

 Your ability to see yourself, acknowledge your shortcomings, and embrace your strengths
is a great confidence booster. Knowing that it’s okay to admit your wrong or don’t
understand something sets you up for growth. Acknowledging aptitude also builds
confidence.
 Strengths reflect those things that come easy to you. Weaknesses are those things that
don’t come easy to you. How you manage your strengths and weaknesses determines
your ability to thrive in the world. Knowing your strengths allows you to engage in
activities that will enable you to shine Knowing your weaknesses will allow you to make
decisions on how to compensate for them. Whether you focus on developing your
strengths, or your weaknesses, is up to you.
~I hope you know your limits well, but don’t stay within those limits. Overcome the limits each day.
- Kim Namjoon

 Fourth, work toward growth.

 All of these skills lead you to self-efficacy. You understand that self-work and growth are
positive activities that result in healthy, happy you with a drive to achieve something.
 Goal setting does not have to be boring. There are many benefits and advantages to
having a set of goals to work towards. Setting goals helps trigger new behaviors, helps
guides your focus and helps you sustain that momentum in life. Goals also help align your
focus and promote a sense of self-mastery. In the end, you can’t manage what you don’t
measure and you can’t improve upon something that you don’t properly manage. Setting
goals can help you do all of that and more.

~The only time you should ever look back is to see how far you've come. – Mick Kremling
