Welcome back to school, Louisian Gems! I hope you are ready to enrich your mind for another
school year. Another school year means another load of learnings but knowledge is not the only thing
you can acquire in school but also personal development/values. So, for this week you will learn how to
prepare yourself for another year of learning because just how you value knowledge should also be the
same in valuing yourself.
Valuing yourself should start first by having self-awareness. “Knowing oneself is the beginning of
wisdom”. This renowned quote is often attributed to Socrates. But what exactly do you benefit when you
know and understand who you are? When you have self-knowledge, you understand your strengths and
weaknesses, your passions and fears, your life’s desires and dreams. This means you are aware of your
eccentricities (peculiarities) and idiosyncrasies (habits), likes and dislikes, tolerance and limitations. You
know your purpose in life (Doherty, 2017). Also, Meg Selig (2016) suggests that when you know who you
are, you develop understanding of yourself, you would be happier because you can express who you are.
You develop less inner conflict, make better decision and better choices about everything and
understands what motivates you. Subsequently, she emphasized that when you know yourself better,
you have the resistance to social pressure, you are grounded in your values and preferences and less
likely to say “yes” when you want to say “no” and at the same time you develop tolerance and
understanding of others. You can easily help and empathize with others.
And since our topic for this week is very essential, why don’t we start to learn how to practice
self-awareness?
Learning to be self-aware isn’t easy, even for adults. But, if you really value yourself and always allow
room for self-development, you can definitely achieve this.
Being honest with yourself can sometimes be painful, but it’s a necessary component to
long-term happiness and success in our lives.
~What I know for sure is this: The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal for
this year is, you can get there - as long as you're willing to be honest with yourself about the
preparation and work involved. There are no back doors, no free rides. There's just you, this moment,
and a choice. -Oprah Winfrey
~The only time you should ever look back is to see how far you've come. – Mick Kremling
