a). Before Starting Check

Equipment not properly prepared for operation is unsafe equipment. Run a careful
check at the beginning of your shift. If you find something that needs attention,
THINK TWICE before deciding to "let it go this time". Even minor mechanical defects
can lead to personal injury and accidents.
DO NOT allow unauthorised personnel to operate the equipment.
MAKE SURE all guards and other protective devices are in place, secured and not
damaged.
NEVER TAMPER with safety devices.
CHECK the equipment thoroughly for visual defects.
INSPECT your machine according to the Operator's manual and your Supervisor's
instructions.

b). Report a Defective Machine

© Rocklabs | 9015 Boyd Elite Standard Machine Safety | 6

Inspect your machine daily! Check for loose, worn or damaged parts. Report or
correct any unsafe conditions immediately. Do not operate the machine until they
have been corrected. Even a minor defect can become serious. Report any machine
defects to your Supervisor immediately.

c). Start Up Safety

CHECK the equipment for warning tags.
FOLLOW recommended starting procedures.
AFTER machine has started, check everything to be sure it is operating properly.
SHUT DOWN immediately if anything is not operating correctly.
LISTEN for and report any unusual noises.
DO NOT take a chance with a defective machine. REPORT IT TO YOUR
SUPERVISOR.

d). Stopping Safety

Be sure the machine is stopped, Isolated and locked out before cleaning, servicing,
checking belt tension, removing housing covers, making repairs, or attempting to
clear blockages.

e). Before Maintenance

Always lockout electrical controls before performing any type of maintenance work
on the equipment.
When servicing the electrical power unit, lockout the electrical service to the power
unit, as depressing the "stop" button will only stop the motor.
Provide each maintenance person with their own personal padlock and ONE key.

f). Maintenance

understand.
Use the proper tools; keep them clean and in good repair.

working order.
Educate yourself and others in the hazards associated with your job and safe ways
to perform familiar tasks.

3. Installation

This section describes unpacking, assembly & installation requirements.

© Rocklabs | 9015 Boyd Elite Standard Installation | 9

3.1 Boyd Standard
The Boyd Crusher is a heavy machine so it must be installed on a strong timber or concrete floor.
Each foot has a moulded polyurethane foot insert, to help prevent the Crusher moving.

In a Boyd Crusher, the sample stays in the Crusher longer than other crushers because it is being
crushed much finer. Connect a 50 mm hose to the rear of the Boyd (Picture 1) and to the
laboratory dust extraction system. The airflow should be not more than 2.45m3/min (85 foot3/min)
or fine particles may be preferentially removed in the air stream, biasing the crushed sample. Dust
extraction will not remove all fine dust, so the Boyd Crusher should be cleaned regularly.

Picture 1: Crusher Dust Extraction

When the Crusher is installed, check immediately for any bolts, nuts or foreign objects between
the jaws. If the Crusher is started up or operated at any time with unbreakable material between
the jaws, the Crusher bearings or drive shafts could be seriously damaged.

All Boyd Crushers are fully greased and test run before dispatch so there is no need to grease
the Crusher before commencing operation.

*Note A: Direction of rotation is indicated on the Boyd Crusher where the arrows are
printed on the side of the flywheel guards. See Boyd Crusher and Base Manual for more
information.

3.1.1 Services

a). Power
The Boyd crusher is supplied standard with a 5 meter flex cable, 2.5mm2 4 core.
Electrical connections must be only be carried out by a qualified electrical
technician.
These recommendations are a minimum requirement and guide only. They shall
not supersede any local electrical codes or standards.
Refer to electrical schematics for further details.

b). Dust extraction

There is one connection point for the Boyd (50mm). A minimum air flow of
2.15m3/Min (75 foot3/min) and a maximum of 2.45m3/min (85 foot3/min) is
required.
