Tidal prediction by harmonic prediction

Activity Title
Obtain topographical, hydrographical and navigational aids and services
Course outcome information from the nautical charts and publications for voyage planning

 Determine the tidal condition by [linear interpolation and] harmonic prediction

Learning outcome

Chart Room
Activity Area
 Admiralty Tide Table
 Calculator
 Tidal Calculation Software (Online or installed application)
Materials Needed  Computer and projector (or other means to project the computer screen)

Note: The Admiralty Tide Tables Volumes 2 and 7 can also be used in lieu of US
Tide Tables.
Equipment Ratio  1:5
Students are to compute tidal condition in pair. They are assigned a time so that
the whole class are going to compute for the whole 24-hour cycle. The result will
Description be compared at the end of the activity using a tidal prediction software.

Briefing Items to be discussed during briefing:

 Objective of the activity (Relate prior discussion)
 Description of the activity and any general instructions
 Evaluation of performance

Instructor’s Action INSTRUCTOR’S COPY ONLY (In the event that the class size exceeds 20
students, a secondary instructor is required.)

1. Distribute the materials to the class. Brief the class with regards to the activity.
2. Demonstrate the class on how to navigate through the tide tables in order to
get the required information.
3. Facilitate in pairing the class. Assign each pair with a time to calculate for the
required height of tide.
4. Facilitate the class in the calculating the height of tide in step by step using
the form provided.

5. Facilitate the class in plotting the computed values in the chart.

6. Demonstrate the use of tidal prediction software in order to obtain the height
of tide for the same port and time.
7. Facilitate the class in comparing the computed values against the ones
provided by the software.
8. Wrap-up the activity by summarizing the topic vis-à-vis the learning outcomes.

Student’s Action 1. Compute for the height of tide for the assigned time using harmonic
prediction.
2. Participate in plotting the computed values in the chart.
3. Participate in comparing the computed values vis-à-vis the ones provided by
the tidal prediction software.
