ESL LESSON ON ZERO CONDITIONAL

INTRODUCTION:

In English, the zero conditional is one of the four conditional tenses used to talk about general truths,
scientific facts or things that always happen. In this lesson, we will learn how to construct and use the
zero conditional tense in English.

EXPLANATION:

The zero conditional is used to describe things that always happen or are generally true. It is formed by
using the present simple tense in both the condition clause and the result clause. The zero conditional is
called 'zero' because there is no use of modal verbs in the sentence.

FORMULA:

If/When + present simple, present simple

EXAMPLES:

1. If you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils.

2. When the sun sets, it gets dark outside.

3. If you don't eat breakfast, you feel hungry later.

4. When it rains, the grass gets wet.

5. If you mix blue and yellow, you get green.

USAGE:

The zero conditional is used to talk about things that are always true or happen under certain
conditions. For example, if you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it always boils. It is a scientific fact
that can be proven. Similarly, when the sun sets, it always gets dark outside. These are general truths
that we can rely on.

ACTIVITIES:

1. Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb in parentheses.

- If you (mix) blue and yellow, you (get) green.

- When the sun (shine), it (give) us light and warmth.

- If you (not study), you (not pass) the exam.

2. Ask students to share their own zero conditional sentences. For example, "If I drink coffee before
bedtime, I can't sleep."

CONCLUSION:

In this lesson, we learned about the zero conditional in English. We learned that the zero conditional is
used to talk about things that always happen or are generally true. We also learned how to construct
