Lula slams far-right terror as Brazil protest camps

Brazilian security forces cleared protest camps on Monday and arrested 1,500 people as President Luiz
Inacio Lula da Silva condemned “acts of terrorism” after a far-right mob stormed the seat of power,
unleashing chaos on the capital. Soldiers and police personnel mobilised to dismantle an improvised
camp outside the Army’s headquarters in Brasilia. There, some 3,000 supporters of ex-President Jair
Bolsonaro had set up tents — used as a base for the sea of protesters who ran riot inside the
presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court for around four hours on Sunday.

Nepal's PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachand wins vote of confidence in Parliament

Nepal's New PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachand has secured a vote of confidence in Parliament on
Tuesday. Dahal won a vote of confidence in the House almost unopposed. Pushpa Kamal Dahal
received 268 votes in the 275-member parliament. A total of two lawmakers voted against and none
remained neutral. The prime minister required at least 138 votes to win the trust motion.

India, Panama sign MoU to enhance app_20201213

India and Panama have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in
the training of diplomats. External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that in a bilateral
meeting with Panama's Foreign Minister Janaina Tewaney Mencomo in Indore, they also discussed
the opportunities for greater economic, health, finance and people to people linkages.

Privately-owned Virgin Orbit's 1st space launch from Britain's soil failed

In UK, the privately-owned Virgin Orbit's first space launch from Britain's soil has failed when a
reported anomaly prevented the rocket from reaching orbit. It was the first attempt to launch a
satellite from western Europe. The repurposed Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 aircraft, named 'Cosmic Girl'
took off from Cornwall in southwestern England and released the rocket around an hour into flight
over the Atlantic Ocean, toward the south of Ireland. However, Virgin Orbit said it appeared to have
an anomaly in a satellite launch and it had prevented the rocket from reaching orbit.

China suspends issuing short-term to individuals from South Korea and Japan

China has suspended issuing short-term visas to individuals from South Korea and Japan. Beijing's
move comes a day after it announced retaliatory measures against countries that required negative
COVID-19 tests from Chinese travellers. China said that the visa suspension will continue until South
Korea lifts the discriminatory entry restrictions against China.

Last week, South Korea had suspended tourist visas for those coming from China. Japan is however
allowing Chinese visitors if they provide Covid-19 negative test reports.

First 'Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion' meeting of G20 begins in Kolkata.

The first 'Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion' meeting of the G20 began in Kolkata in the
presence of guests and distinguished persons from around the Globe. The meeting began with a round
of discussions aimed at better opening of doors of digital transactions to marginal people for financial
progress and productivity growth. 12 experts from International Financial Organisations participated
in the discussion. Besides, an exhibition on innovative financial products has been put up as a part of
the meet.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has cautioned all television channels against broadcasting
disturbing footage and distressing images. The Ministry had issued an advisory to all television
channels against reporting incidents of accidents, deaths, and violence including violence against
women, children, and the elderly in a manner that grossly compromises good taste and decency. The
advisory has been issued after the Ministry noticed several instances of lack of discretion by TV
channels.

Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh released the Theme of National Science Day 2023
at a function in New Delhi. This year the theme of National Science Day is Global Science for Global

issues in a global context which is having a bearing on global Well-being. National Science Day is
celebrated every year on the 28th of February to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by

Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the ‘Jai Hind- The New Light and Sound Show' at Red Fort in
New Delhi. The show will be showcased in Hindi and English languages. A total of 700 people can
watch the show at one time. The light and sound show in Red Fort is being started after a gap of almost
five years. This show is a new avatar of the light and sound show, in which a dramatic presentation of
bravery and the history of India from the 17th century to the present day, will be shown. The one-
hour long show has been divided into three parts showcasing the important historical events related
to rise of the Marathas, the 1857 War of Independence, the rise of the Indian National Army, INA trial
and the fight for Independence.

N. Kotiswar Singh appointed Acting CJ of Gauhati HC

Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh has been appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Gauhati High
Court, the Law Ministry notification said. A notification issued by the Department of Justice in the Law
Ministry said Justice Singh would take over from Thursday after incumbent Chief Justice Rashmin
Manharbhai Chhaya demits office on Wednesday. The judges of the High Court’s retire at the age of
62 and those of the Supreme Court at 65.

The Ministry of Defence said that Defence Research and Development Organisation, DRDO,
successfully carried out a training launch of a Short-Range Ballistic Missile, Prithvi-II from the
Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the Odisha coast. It said that the Prithvi-II missile is a well-
established system and has been an integral part of India’s nuclear deterrence.

The Ministry said that the missile struck its target with high accuracy. The user training launch
successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile.

Central government extends term of RBI Deputy Governor Michael Patra for one more year

The Central government has extended the tenure of Dr Michael Debabrata Patra as Deputy Governor
of the Reserve Bank of India, RBI, for one more year with effect from 15 January 2023. Michael
Debabrata Patra took over as Deputy Governor of the RBI on January 15, 2020. He was an Executive
Director of India's central bank before being elevated to the post of Deputy Governor. Patra, a career
central banker since 1985, has worked in various positions with the Reserve Bank of India.

World Bank says India will be fastest-growing economy among seven largest emerging markets and
developing economies

The World Bank has said in a report that India is expected to be the fastest-growing economy among
the seven largest emerging markets and developing economies. While the World Bank projected a
gloomy outlook for the global economy, it said that the Indian economy is expected to grow at the
rate of 6.6 percent in the fiscal year 2023-24. It said that the global economy will come perilously close
to a recession this year. It forecast weaker growth in all the world's top economies including the United
States, Europe and China.

In its report titled Global Economic Prospects, the World Bank noted that India's growth expanded by
9.7 percent on an annual basis in the first half of the fiscal year 2022-23, reflecting strong private
consumption and fixed investment growth. The World Bank also slashed its forecast for global growth
this year by nearly half to just 1.7 percent from its previous projection of 3 percent.

Defence Acquisition Council approves proposals worth Rs 4,276 crore

Defence Acquisition Council approved three proposals worth 4,276 crore rupees to strengthen the
country's deterrence and combat readiness. The DAC has accorded approval for procurement of
HELINA Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, launchers and associated support equipment which will be
integrated to the Advanced Light Helicopter. This missile is an essential part of weaponization of
Advanced Light Helicopter for countering enemy threats.

The DAC granted approval for procurement of Brahmos Launcher and Fire Control System for the
Shivalik class of ships and Next Generation Missile Vessels for the Indian Navy.

Housing sales in 2022 rose to nine-year high: Knight Frank

With the opening up of the economy post the pandemic, Knight Frank said housing sales rose 34% to
a nine-year high while gross office leasing grew 36% in 2022 across 8 major cities. While housing sales
rose to 3,12,666 units across 8, major cities, the gross leasing of office space grew to 51.6 million
square feet.

PE inflows plunged 42% to $23.3 bn in 2022: report

Private equity (PE) investments into domestic companies fell sharply year-on-year by 42% to $23.3
billion in 2022, the lowest since 2019, when it stood at $15.8 billion, according to a report by Refinitiv.
It attributed the sharp drop to geopolitical tensions, rising interest rates and recession fears in the
West, which all made global investors cautious.

India defeated Sri Lanka by 67 runs in the first One Day International of the three-match series at
Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Chasing a victory target of 374, the visitors made 306 for eight
in their allotted 50 overs. Dasun Shanaka hit an unbeaten 108 runs. Virat Kohli scored 113, his 73rd
international century. Rohit Sharma made 83 and Shubman Gill contributed 70 runs.

Meanwhile Virat Kohli equalled Sachin Tendulkar's record of slamming 20 One Day International
centuries on the home soil. Kohli took only 99 innings to score his 20th ODI hundred on home soil,
while Sachin did so in 160 innings. With the latest ton, Kohli now has 73 centuries to his credit across
all formats, second only to Tendulkar's 100 centuries.

Gareth Bale announces retirement from football

Gareth Bale announced his retirement from club and international football, bringing to an end one of
the most decorated careers in British football history. Bale inspired Wales to qualify for two European
Championships and a first World Cup since 1958 and won five CL titles in nine years at Real Madrid
between 2013 and 2022.

Chetan Sharma was reappointed as the chairman of the senior selection committee, exactly two
months after his entire panel was disbanded by the BCCI for the Indian team's semifinal exit in the T20
World Cup. Chetan's new team, though, would have entirely new faces with junior chairman of
selectors S Sharath of South Zone being promoted. The others in the panel are former seamer Subroto
Banerjee from East Zone, Salil Ankola from West Zone and Test opener Shiv Sunder Das from the
Central zone.
