CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS

SCOPE

INTRODUCTION
Amidst the pandemic, the Senior High School Students during this first
semester of S.Y. 2021-2022 experienced many alterations in their lives. This
includes their budgeting and spending habits that affects their financial needs.
The affects brought by the current situation lead us to conduct this study to
help Senior High School Students gain awareness of their budgeting and
spending habit. As a Senior High School Student, budgeting money is so
hard for us, but spending it is so easy. And this habit is not right to follow
especially in our situation today where our parents are having hard time to
make or find money. It is not the right time to order a lot from shopee, lazada
or other online store as what we have saw on social medias, but a lot of us
are having hard time to deal with this specially now that we are just staying at
home.
The alterations in Senior High School Student’ lives is a matter that is also
experienced by us. From budgeting the allowance to spending it, all has gone
change and it caused an impact to students’ behavior. Most of bills are paid
through online, can shop through online and so things seems to be easy anad
practical. But the problem is that money shortage comes upon because bills
and shopping fees comes successively. The researcher lost the control to his
budgeting as he gets overwhelmed with the new habits of spending, shopping
and paying in short, he developed the new habit of spending too much money
for his uncontrollable desires and needs. And so it drives him to conduct this
research to resolve such problems and come up with a good plan that wold
bring him and beneficiaries a good result to their financial and behavioral
state.
According to IJCRT, student budgeting primarily refers to management of
financial expenses within their assigned budget. Several factors make the
behavior of students dynamic and different from each other. These factor can
be technical as well as psychological and controllable or uncontrollable. The
major challenge that students face is the difficulty to budget their expenses
and save a proportional amount every month for contingent events. With the
technological revolution and advancement, students have adapted their
budgeting and spending habits accordingly. The advanced marketing
strategies of the firms have made the students spend extravagantly on wants
and not just needs. And the marketing tactics have influenced the adults too
which has led the young to follow their footsteps and pend free-handedly.
There is a vast difference in the spending behavior of students as the system
to free the younger population at an early age is different. Developing the
saving habits of students can be an effective tool to encourage the younger to
live in a financially suitable way. The more knowledge students have about
their financial responsibility and status, the less likely they are to be in debt.
Academically speaking, students’ spending behaviors hold importance to
marketers as they continue to understand and develop proper market plans to
address their products and satisfy the needs of the students. Hence, spending
habits is an important subject to understand. Around the world, nearly all
students of all levels have their allowances for educational, personal and
other purposes.
It stated by (Messinger, 2018) that every parent approaches their
student’s financial responsibilities differently, shaping the way they manage
and spend their finances is directly proportional to the amount of allowance
their parents give. It was also proven that if a student receives less allowance
for a week he/she knows that their is less to spend. This this gives the a better
sense of financial awareness, establishing priorities for them to rationalize and
spend their money effectively. A good spending and budgeting habit is
essential to having better finances because it helps the students to save and
spend tehir finances effectively.
According to a Press Reader article by (Garcia, 2017), it is said that in the
Philippines, a vast majority of Filipino guardians are concerned regarding the
financial fate of their kids, particularly their capacity to save and manage their
finances, which may affect spending behavior.
According to the Standard and Poor’s Global Financial Literacy Survey in
2014, it is shown that the Philippines is ranked 117th out of 143 countries in
terms of financial literacy. The survey presents questions such as risk
diversification, inflation, numeracy and compound interest, it was shown that
only 25% of Filipinos are financially literate.
This research will study the Senior High School students’ finances,
budgeting control and their influences that has driven them to spend, as well
as the output that can be generated from this study.
This research is most likely to find out a budget for students to limit their
spending, a little savings on the part of the students so that they can invest in
some good places and so that they can manage their personal finance with
the budget being the counter for measuring. It is to help them in their
budgeting as it is important to their financial stability. It is in this light that this
research is conducted to see the root of the problems with regards to the
spending and budgeting habits, give awareness of the impact of the
alterations that the senior high school students’ experienced and provide a
way to practice so they wouldn’t struggle in controlling their undesirable
spending habits and in budgeting their allowance.
The focus of this paper is to determine the budgeting and spending habits
of the students and to know he factors that influence these habits in this
school year. We need to conduct this study as it will sum up all the expenses
that the students spend and how they were able to handle in terms of
budgeting their money despite of the many things that they need to buy. The
general objective of the problem is to know how senior high school students
do their budgeting and spending habits. The overall purpose is to know and
understand how senior high school students budget their money and their
habits in spending it.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
This study is supported by the theory of Self Control Theory by Hopwood
in 1976, explains that this can be helped by a suitable system of rewards,e.g.
performance related pay. The object is to keep costs under control and, if
possible, complete the project under budget. The thought of this theory is in
order for the students to know on how to control their self on not spending
their money or allowances to unnecessary stuff.
Motivational Theory by Kay Hofstede in 1967, explains that in order for the
students to save or budget their allowances they must be motivated. The
theory also explained that in saving, it’s a must to set a particular goal that will
motivate you to achieve your budgeting plan.
Teenagers are lacking in the basic knowledge and skills important in
personal finance such as savings, investing, credit and debt management
(Tennyson & Nyguen, 2001) SHS students has to develop their skills in
financing their allowance. This will allow them to inhabit a good practices in
spending and budgeting their finances.

The study focuses in the different budgeting and spending habits of

Senior High School Students. The assumptions of the researchers were
based according to Tempo (2010) mentioned that “Students have the
tendency to spend their allowances on their recreational activities such as,
renting a computer unit for fun and games, buying items at the sopping mall,
and spending money for the peers. Teens are active consumes in terms of the
money they spend, as well as in the influence they wield in their families and
on societal trends. Despite being raised in a period of rapid change, they
display a remarkable self-confidence in their judgement”.
Researchers will conduct an online survey and distribute questionnaires to
the SHS students in Saint Joseph College to gather data and information.
This will allow the researcher to know the overall percentage and find the
factors that influence the budgeting and spending habits of the students. And
that will become a way to generate an output, which is to teach students in
developing savings habits.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to determine students’ budgeting and spending habits
during this first semester of S.Y. 2021-2022 to come up with a plan or output.

Specific Problems:
1. What are the budgeting and spending habits of students?
2. What factors influence these budgeting and spending habits?
3. What output can be generated from this study?

RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
There is a significant relationship between spending habits and budgeting
habits.

Null hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between spending habits and budgeting
habits.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The importance of this study is to know how students in Senior High
School students spend and budget their money. Help students how to spend
and budget their money properly. And let them be aware the difference
between their needs and wants.
The result of the study will benefit the following:

Students in Senior High School- Some students are very conscious of the
money they spent to have enough left to save. This study will provide
recommendations for them to spend their money wisely, thus improving their
spending behavior.

School Facilities- Facilities such as cafeteria and bookstore will have a better
knowledge of the spending behavior of their consumers, which can also be
