COMBINED DEFENCE SERVICES EXAMINATION (CDSE)

CDS Exam (Combined Defence Services)  is scheduled twice a year by UPSC.  Candidates have
to ful ll  di erent parameters of eligibility criteria such as  nationality, educational

quali cation, age, marital status, and physical conditions.

Candidates appearing for the  CDS Exam  must have completed their graduation or at least be

appearing for the nal exam of the degree. Also, the minimum and maximum age vary based
on di erent academies.

CDS Eligibility
The UPSC mentions the CDS eligibility in detail in the o cial noti cation of the exam.
Candidates can check the CDS Noti cation as well as the exam calendar on the UPSC website
(www.upsc.gov.in).

Age Limit, Gender & Marital Status


Eligibility – CDS Age Limit Age Limit (In years)
Indian Naval Academy (INA) 19 years to 22 years
Air Force Academy 19 years to 23 years
Indian Military Academy (IMA) 19 years to 24 years
Of cers’ Training Academy (SSC Women Non-Technical Course) 19 years to 25 years
Of cers’ Training Academy (SSC Course for Men) 19 years to 25 years

Note – Candidates below 25 years of age must be unmarried. Marriage is not permitted during

training. Married candidates above 25 years of age are eligible to apply, but during the
training period they will neither be provided married accommodation nor can they live with
family out of the premises.

Note  –  Male divorcee/widower candidates cannot be treated as unmarried males for the
purpose of their admission in IMA/INA/AFA/OTA, Chennai courses, and accordingly they are
not eligible for these courses.

The number of vacancies given above is tentative and may be changed at any stage by
Services HQ. Candidates should verify the exact number of vacancies from the latest UPSC
noti cation.

Important Note –

1. Graduates with the rst choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are to submit proof of
Graduation/provisional certi cates on the date of commencement of the SSB Interview

at the SSB.
2. Candidates in the nal year of their graduation can also apply provided they do not have
any backlog at the application. Also, they have to submit proof of passing the degree

examination at the time of commencement of course.

3. Candidates possessing professional and technical quali cations which are recognised
by government as equivalent to professional and technical degrees would also be
eligible for admission to the examination.

CDS Eligibility – Nationality /Citizenship


To be eligible for the CDS exam, candidates have to meet the criteria for nationality and
citizenship.

They must be –

1. A citizen of India, or
2. A subject of Nepal, or
3. A subject of Bhutan, or

4. A Tibetan refugee permanently settled in India from and before January 1, 1962.
5. A person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, East African
countries of Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Zaire, Zambia,

Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (2), (3), (4) and (5) presents a certi cate of
eligibility issued by the Government of India to the recruiting body.

However, the Certi cate of eligibility will not be necessary in the case of candidates who are
Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

CDS Eligibility – Physical & Medical Standards


Candidates must be physically and mentally t as per the guidelines of UPSC. A good number

of quali ed candidates get disquali ed on medical grounds. Therefore, candidates are

strongly advised to get themselves medically tested before applying for CDS Exam. The
detailed medical instructions can be downloaded from the respective Service (Army, Navy

and Ai rForce) Websites

Important points –

 The minimum acceptable height for male candidates is 157.5 cms. (157 cms for Navy
and 162.5 cms for Air Force).
 For Women candidates minimum acceptable height is 152 cms.
 For Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of North-Eastern region of India,
Garhwali and Kumaon, the Minimum acceptable height will be 5 cms less.

 In case of candidates from Lakshadweep, the minimum acceptable height can be
reduced by 2 cms. However, the minimum height for all entries is 148 cm after all types
of waivers/dispensations. Otherwise, the candidate shall be considered a dwarf.

The candidates applying for the examination should ensure that they ful l all the eligibility
conditions for admission to the examination. The CDS eligibility in terms of physical and
medical standards covering height and weight for di erent age groups, vision standards for
Naval o cers, waist-hip ratio, body mass index, etc. Hence, candidates are advised to go
through the o cial noti cation for further clari cation on Combined Defence Service

Eligibility Criteria.

Educational Quali cations:


    1. F
  or I.M.A. and O cers’ Training Academy, Chennai — Degree of a recognized
University or equivalent.
2.  For Indian Naval Academy— Degree in Engineering from a recognized

University/Institution
3. F
  or Air Force Academy—Degree of a recognized University (with Physics and

Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

Graduates with rst choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are to submit proof of

Graduation/provisional certi cates on the date of commencement of the SSB Interview at the

SSB.

Candidates who are studying in the nal year/semester Degree course and have yet to pass

the nal year degree examination can also apply provided candidate should not have any
present backlog upto the last semester / year for which results have been declared upto the

time of submission of application and they will be required to submit proof of passing the
degree examination at the time of commencement of course.

Physical Standards:
Candidates must be physically t according to physical standards for admission to Combined

Defence Services Examination. The detailed guidelines can be obtained from the CDSE

Noti cation from the UPSC website.

Candidates are required to apply online by using the website http://upsconline.nic.in
Candidates are required to apply Online using the link www.upsconline.nic.in Detailed
instructions for lling up Online Applications are available on the above- mentioned website.
Candidates serving in the Armed Forces are required to inform their Commanding O cer in
writing that they have applied for this examination. They are also required to submit NOC in
this regard at the time of SSB interview.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION
  1.  The Competitive examination comprises:

2. Interview for intelligence and personality test of such candidates as may be called for

interview at one of the Services Selection Centres.
