ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Professor Anita Sarkar for giving us the
opportunity to undertake this project on Mess Food Wastage Analysis at XLRI. It helped us
to learn and analyse the critical factors that are responsible for huge quantities of food being
wasted by using different analytical methods. We would also like to extend our thanks to our
peers who helped us with their valuable input and by actively participating in the survey
conducted by us.

We want to take this opportunity to express our thanks to every individual who made this
project possible with their valuable time and contributions without which this would not have
been conceivable.
Introduction
DATA COLLECTION METHOD
We used the Convenience sampling technique to carry out this research where we talked about the
factors responsible for causing food wastage. We collected data from our desired sample space by
sharing the google form and getting responses from them about them. Our target sample included
people easily accessible to us, i.e. current XLRI students from both years. It is efficient as the sample
pool was readily available to us. It would be more relevant as it is quick and gives better quality
results in the target segment.
REGRESSION ANALYSIS
After conducting Survey as mentioned, we checked the correlation of the independent
variables as mentioned below with waste as our dependent variable from the responses
collected. We’ve used logistic regression. We realised quite a bit of our assumptions were
redundant and had no relation to the output. We then used the step function to decide the
most ideal correlation model which gave us a linear relation between Wastage and Lack of
Variety, Quality, waiting time, size of plate and breakfast timings. The dependent variable
and independent variables that we have based our study on are as described below:

Dependent Variable:
Y – Waste

Independent Variables:
1. Lack of variety
2. Wait time
3. Quality
4. Plate size
5. Timing
6. Lunch timing
7. Supper timing
8. Dinner Timing

We have performed Regression Analysis for the above variables in R using Linear Model &
Step Model. The results of the Linear Model are mentioned below:
In addition to the above regression analysis, we have also used the step model to improve the
correlation and significance between our dependent and independent variables. They are
mentioned below.
From this model, we can see a better relationship between dependent and independent
variables. There is a high correlation between food wastage and lack of variety, plate size,
quality, timings and wait time.
