Title: Single Phase Induction Motors and Servo Motors: Review,

Basic Principles, Circuits and Usage of Each Type of Motor

Electromechanical system comprises of electrical and mechanical components and

subsystems. These systems can be applied in electrical engineering, mechatronics and
mechanical engineering etc. An electromechanical system is capable to convert electrical
energy into mechanical energy or vice versa. Motor is one of the key components in these
systems that provides a mechanical output generated by an electrical input. One of
the important applications of motor is in the automotive and electric vehicle industries.
Motor is one of the key components in an electric vehicle. Due to the rapid technological
revolution in electric vehicle industry and robotics, researches in high performance motors
had increased over time.

In this assignment, you are required to present a systematic literature review of current
research and development of particular motors and how they could be used in electric
vehicles and robotics. In this (individual) report, you are required to provide a general
review of the following motors including:
(a) Induction Motors.
(b) Servo Motors.
You can explain the motor construction, working principles, equivalent circuit, winding
arrangement, performance characteristics, advantage and disadvantages etc. You can support
your statements with suitable and relevant Tables, Figures, diagrams and equations etc.

Choose one of these motor types [from (a) to (b)] and recommend how it could be used in an
electric vehicle or robotic system. You can provide one or more applications or functions
of this motor in an electric vehicles and/or robotics. You can discuss several factors in
determining motor’s performance and its selection criteria including some of the following
(but not limited to):
▪ Motor size, weight.
▪ Motor speed, speed control mechanism, torque.
▪ Power requirements, power density, power rating.
▪ Types of losses.
▪ Vehicle types, load characteristics.
▪ Efficiency, duty cycle.
▪ Reliability, cost.
▪ Noise, vibration etc.
Submission Guidelines

You are encouraged to use Times New Roman, Font 12, 1.5 spacing in your report writing (this
is not a mandatory requirement). You can use any of the university recommended referencing
convention or styles. The referencing style has to be consistent throughout the report. You are
required to submit ONE single (1) report file in either PDF or Word format including cover
page and references/bibliography using official, university approved submission portal -
Canvas before the due date. If you have multiple files, kindly merge them prior to submission.

Three (3) campus specific links will be created. Kindly submit your report using the correct
submission link based on your campus (Edinburgh, Malaysia, Dubai etc). This submission link
is associated with a Turnitin account which will generate a similarity report with similarity
index. Please save a copy/proof of your submission for your own record. All submissions
shall be made by the deadline. You will be notified again via Canvas announcement board
and email once the link is opened for submission. You are encouraged to submit your work
once it has been completed. Kindly avoid last minute submission to prevent any potential
submission error.
