VICE CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE

Jamia Millia Islamia, A++ Grade Central University by NAAC came into existence when two national
movements gravitated together. One was anti-colonial activism known as the ‘Khilafat Movement’
and the other was pro-independence movement namely the ‘Non Cooperation movement. Jamia’s
legacy is rich and illustrious.

In the last few years, Jamia’s ranking has risen in all parameters of national and international
assessments. In the second cycle of NAAC assessment in 2021, Jamia received A++ grade and was
placed at 3rd position in the universities category ranking by NIRF. In Global ranking by times
Higher Education (UK) and QS Ranking, Jamia ranked between 600-800.

JMI is an ensemble of a multi-layered educational system which covers all aspects of schooling,
under-graduate, post-graduate, Ph.D. and post-doctoral education. With 10 faculties of learning,
39 teaching and research departments, over 30 centers of learning and research, 190 courses,
approximately 800 faculty members and more than 20000 students, we attract the brightest young
minds from all over the country. They use the creative space of JMI to actualize their potential.

During the Pandemic Covid-19 situation, JMI could establish online automation system for student
related affairs. This entailed regular engagement of teachers and students through online mode of
teaching and learning process. The staff of the Office of the Controller of Examinations worked hard
towards timely conduct of examinations and declaration of results which made our students eligible
for getting job opportunities at National and International level.

Jamia marches ahead to attain its mission by blending contemporary knowledge with required skills
and values to groom high caliber thinkers who are morally upright and physically sound, ready to
take up challenges confronting the present society and prove to be productive individuals in ever
changing knowledge society.

I would like to congratulate Deans of Faculties, Head of Departments, Directors of Centres, Faculty
members, all stake-holders of JMI, the members of prospectus committee, on their successful

Significance of the Logo

Right on the top is a star with the inscription - Allah-O-Akbar. When in dark
nights poor travellers have to travel jungles and there is no one to show them the
way, they chart their course with the help of stars. The star of Allah–O-Akbar is
the guiding star of Jamia. Its eyes are fixed on this star which shows it the path in
the darkling world. It reflects the truth that Allah is the greatest and he who bows
his head before Him only, discovers the truth. Having bowed before Him, how can
the head bow before anything else? Beneath this glittering star is a book with the inscription,
Allammal Insaana Maalam Yalam (Taught man that which he knew not). This is a verse from the
Holy Quran. Through the Holy Quran, Allah has revealed His Will to His differences of caste,
class, colour, of master and slave, and became true to His tenets. This book led from darkness to
light, and placed the wayward and lost on the Straight Path. The Prophet made an example of his
own life. By the light of his eyes and the warmth of his heart, He prepared a group of good persons
who cleaned the world of evil and spread the Word of God. On both sides of the Book are two date
trees typical of the land where God‘s last Prophet was born. They are symbolic of the barren valley
in which nothing grew; but it was there that the sapling of din took root. These trees are emblems
of hope from a land in which not a leaf or flower could sprout; but wherein suddenly the springs
of hidaya (guidance) burst forth and drenched the communities of the heart. They are a source
of consolation for people who became disheartened with adverse circumstances. Why do external
factors make them lose hope?

At the very bottom is a tiny crescent which reads - Jamia Millia Islamia in Arabic. This crescent
is small but just as it expands to become the full moon on the fourteenth night, so also Jamia.
Meaning that this is the beginning of our work. It will expand to become the full moon and a
source of delight for the eve of its beholder.

Choice Based Credit System
Jamia Millia Islamia has introduced Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) at both Undergraduate and
Postgraduate levels with effect from the session 2015-2016. This system is intended to provide
students a wide diversity of subjects from which they can choose what they really like and have
aptitude for, apart from the core subject they have chosen. The flexibility inherent in the system
will allow students to acquire a rounded personality by choosing subjects across disciplines
and mediums. The University would like to encourage interdisciplinary among students in their
studies and research. To facilitate this, a cumulative list of courses that will run under CBCS is being
provided. Students are advised to go through the list carefully so that they can make an informed
choice. Course Advisors in all departments may be contacted for advice or any other help related to
the CBCS. List of program advisors is available here.
The courses under Choice Based Credit System offered for various programs are classified under the
following categories:
