Directions: Answer the Following exercises in word format too. Turn in by only the key person of
the group. Only one will turn for the group. Only those present in the breakout rooms are
considered part of the group. Deadline until tomorrow night 8:00PM.

1. Find the elements of the sets represented as follows and write the cardinal number
of each set.

a. Set A is the first 8 multiples of 7

b. Set B = {a, e, i, o, u}
c. Set C = {x | x are even numbers between 20 and 40}

Solution:

a. A = {7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56} eight

b. B = {a,e,i,o,u} five
c. C = {22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38} nine

2. If Set A = {a,b,c}, Set B = {a,b,c,p,q,r}, U = {a,b,c,d,p,q,r,s}, find the following

using sets formulas. (Olaivar & Martin)

a. AUB
b. A∩B
c. A'
d. Is A ⊆ B? (Here 'U' is the universal set).
Solution:

a. A U B = {a, b, c, p, q, r}
b. A ∩ B = {a, b, c}
c. A' = {d, p, q, r, s}
d. Yes, because all the elements in set A appeared in set B

3. Express the given set in set-builder form: A = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14}

Solution:
• A = {x ∈ N | 2 ≤ x ≤ 14; x is even}
• Set A is a set of all x such that x is a natural even number greater than or equal to 2 and
less than or equal to 14.

4. If A = {p, q, r, s} and B = {7, 8, 9}, find which of the following is a set of ordered pair, are
relations from A to B?

Solution:

A ⊂ B = {(p, 7), (p, 8), (p, 9), (q, 7), (q, 8), (q, 9), (r, 7), (r, 8), (r, 9), (s, 7), (s, 8), (s,
9)}

5. In an international conference of 200 people, there are 53 Indian women and 39 Indian
men. Of these Indian people, 7 are doctors and 42 are either men or doctors. There are
no foreign doctors. How many women doctors are attending the conference?

Solution:

# 1: Find the total number of Indians at the conference.

Total Indians = Indian Women + Indian Men

n = 53 + 39

n = 92

# 2: Find the number of foreigners at the conference.

Total number of people at the conference = 200

Number of foreigners = Total people - Number of total Indians

n = (NoF) 200 - (NoTI) 92

n = 108

# 3: Find the number of women doctors at the conference.

Number of Indian doctors = 7

Given (either Indian men or doctor) = 42

Therefore, n(AUB)= n(A) + B - n(AMB)

n(Indian men U Doctor) = (Indian men) + (Doctor) - n(Indian men n Doctor)

42 = 39 + 7 - 4

As there are no foreign doctors, all doctors are Indian.

Men doctors = 4

Number of women doctors = Total doctors - Men

doctors

n=7-4

n=3

FINAL ANSWER = 3 women doctors attendees

6. Differentiate all types of set discussed in the video by giving concrete examples not used
in the video.

1) Finite sets 4) Equivalent sets

A = {number of letters in the alphabet} A = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

B = {months in a year} B = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}

2) Infinite sets 5) Joint sets

A = {odd numbers after 15} A = {c, r, a, f, t}

B = {sand on beach} B = (f, r, a, c, t, i, o, n, s}

3) Equal sets 6) Disjoint sets

A = {c, h, e, a, p} A = {t, r, e, e}

B = {p, e, a, c, h} B = {s, o, i, l}

7. Characterize how a relation is not a function by giving concrete examples.

Solution:

Example 1:

Now let’s consider the set of ordered pairs that relates the terms “even” and “odd” to
the first five natural numbers. It would appear as:

{(odd, 1), (even, 2), (odd, 3), (even, 4) , (odd, 5) }

Notice that each element in the domain,

{even, odd} is not paired with exactly one element in the range, {1,2,3,4,5}. For
example, the term “odd” corresponds to three values from the domain, {1,3,5} and the
term “even” corresponds to two values from the range, {2,4}. This violates the
definition of a function, so this relation is not a function.

Example 2:

{( -3, 7), (-1, 5), (0, -2), ( -5, 9) , ( -5, 3)}

If you see any duplicates or repetitions in the x-values, the relation is not a function.
As we can see duplication in X-values with different y-values, then this relation is not
a function.
