ideas are well
connected and flow Read the speech delivered by Esther in their
together smoothly. class. Observe how Esther connected her thoughts
smoothly in her task about her Christmas vacation
adventure.

My parents and I went to our ancestral house in Napsan, Puerto Princesa City. I was
so excited to see my Lola Piling and my cousins too. I missed Lola’s bedtime stories, as well
as her food specialties binakol and nilupak.
I did many things with my cousins in Napsan. In the morning, we went to the barn
to feed and milk the goats. Then, we swam in the river while others were looking for shells
to cook. Afterwards, we had our picnic lunch at Salakot Falls. In the evening, we strolled
at the beach side, followed the sound of the owls and caught the star like fireflies in the
woods.
What’s more exciting was Kuya Macoy, my eldest cousin, invited me to fish in the
pond nearby our house. He told us to find earthworms for the bait while my father was
making the fishing rod. As soon as the things were all set up, we went on impatiently. It
was my first time to go fishing. I jumped and shouted in excitement every time that my rod
catches a fish. At last, we filled our basket with different sizes of fishes such as tilapya
and dalag. I was so happy.
On our last day, I gave lola Piling the gift that I personally made. The long red woven
scarf looks good on her. She was very happy. I hugged and kissed her before we left.

2
Using Appropriate Cohesive Devices in Various Types of Speech

Noticed the blackened words and phrases in the text above are called cohesive
devices. They connect ideas between different clauses, sentences, and paragraphs. These
connectors show logical relationships between different parts of the same sentence.

Furthermore, cohesive devices link the ideas of the text in the manner the author
wants the reader or listener to comprehend. They connect key information in our speeches
by showing: additional information, similarity, contrast, enumeration, example, time
and sequence and result or consequence. If you use a wrong word or phrase to link your
ideas to another part of your sentence then you will confuse your reader or your listener.

Study the table below to understand different cohesive devices

according to their respective functions.

COHESIVE DEVICES ACCORDING TO FUNCTION

Again, also, and, then, besides, furthermore, as

• Add information well as, moreover

Once again, likewise, similarly

• Show similarity

But, however, in contrast, yet, though, although,

• Signal difference or contrast on the contrary, regardless

Firstly, secondly, finally, in the first place, then,

• Hint enumeration next

bold print, these cohesive devices are used according to their respective functions.

Indeed, we are graduating, but ours seem so different from those who
graduated ahead of us.

While others smiled for pictures and tossed their caps, we were lying in bed at
home wishing that all these would soon come to pass that our dreams for
graduation ceremony will resume. Hence, we can enjoy the most awaited moment in
our four years of struggle in our studies and make our parents proud of our
accomplishments.

Activity 2
Directions: The following is an excerpt from the inaugural address of the current President
of the Republic of the Philippines, His Excellency, Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Choose from the
box the correct cohesive devices you need to complete his speech. Write your answers on
the blanks.

And However Therefore But Meanwhile

To borrow the language of F. Sionil Jose, we have become our own worst
enemies _______ we must have the courage and the will to change ourselves.

Love of country, subordination of personal interests to the common good,

concern and care for the helpless and the impoverished – these are among the lost
and faded values that we seek to recover and revitalize as we commence our
journey towards a better Philippines. The ride will be rough. ____________come and
join me just the same. Together, shoulder to shoulder, let us take the first wobbly
steps in this quest.

There are two quotations from revered figures that shall serve as the
foundation upon which this administration shall be built.

“The test of government is not whether we add more to the abundance of those
who have much; it is whether we provide for those who have little.”– Franklin
Delano Roosevelt

And from (Abraham) Lincoln I draw this inspiration: “You cannot strengthen
the weak by weakening the strong; You cannot help the poor by discouraging the
rich; You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer; You
cannot further the brotherhood by inciting class hatred among men.”

My economic and financial, political policies are contained in those

quotations, though couched in general terms. Read between the lines. I need not
go into specifics now. They shall be supplied to you in due time.

____________, there are certain policies and specifics of which cannot wait for
tomorrow to be announced.

_____________, I direct all department secretaries and the heads of agencies to

reduce requirements and the processing time of all applications, from the
submission to the release. I order all department secretaries and heads of
agencies to remove redundant requirements and compliance with one department
or agency, shall be accepted as sufficient for all.

Reflect on this…
Can a speech be called coherent if the ideas are cluttered?

Let’s Do More

Activity 1
Directions: Underline the five (5) cohesive devices used in the speech given by an official
of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in a press conference
about the endemic Flora and Fauna of Puerto Princesa City,

Do you know that there is a carnivorous plant lives in the mountain ranges
of our City? This plant has a pitcher vase-like leaf that forms a passive pitfall trap
for many unwary insects. It is endemic in many of our towering mountains in
Puerto Princesa City such as Mt. Beaufort, Mt. Thumb Pick, and Mt. Cleopatra’
Needle. This very interesting flora is called Pitcher Plant (N e p e n t h e s ).

Pitcher plant grows at elevations of 1,100 to 1,236 meters above sea level.
They are commonly found in a wide range of habitats with poor soil conditions,
those that lack Nitrogen. Therefore, they get nitrogen and other mineral nutrients
on feasting insects like ants, flies beetles, and butterflies.

It grows in bunches and can spread to several feet in diameter. Depending

on species, pitcher plants can sometimes exceed 35 centimeters in height and
have a capacity of 1.5 to 2 liters of water.

Using its lid, nectar, and colorful flowers, Pitcher plant attracts its prey to
trap them inside the cup. Insects are often attracted to its scent and colorful
appearance and make a deadly mistake to take a slide in its slippery lip. Once
inside, poor creatures can nearly impossible escape. The pitcher plant then digests
its prey and absorbs the nutrients.

Although endemic in our place, they are like balintong, katala, kalaw, and
tandikan that also are endanger. Pitcher plants are prone to poaching too; they
are very enticing to many plant collectors. For that reason, if you will happen to
come across and get a closer look at this plant, please remember to conserve and
maintain the biodiversity of our nature. Pitcher plant and other species of flora in
our mountains always belong to the wild and not to our gardens at home.

Activity 2
Directions: The Guidance Counselor delivered a speech during the parent and student
orientation day. However, the passage of the speech has been placed in random orders.
Reorder the paragraphs by numbering the sentences from 1-5 to form a well-structured
speech.

I strongly believe that children who are well mannered at school,

learned first from their environment at home. The following reasons show
________1. why.

Furthermore, it is the father and mother’s first responsibility to lead

their children uprightly. They are to be kind yet firm in their discipline. Finally,
parents are to make their home bright and peaceful, with these, the children
______2. will grow in a haven filled high morals and principles.

Secondly, home is where children should learn self-control and

temperance. If they are left uncontrolled, then they will become self-willed and
intemperate. Their attitudes in school will mirror the life they have
______3. experienced at home.

In conclusion, the way that the children behave is the product of how
the parents manage their homes. Their parents carry a fundamental
responsibility in shaping and monitoring their children’s growth both in
______4. moral and in academics.

Firstly, parents must mold in their offspring’s’ childhood the virtuous

habits which will help them grow independently. For instance, teaching the
child to fix his bed upon waking every morning. This might be a small
accomplishment but great things start with small successes – every little
