3 Changes in Materials
Quarter 1 Week 3 Day 4
Name: ________________________________
Grade/Section: __________ Date: ______

Oh, It’s Magic!

Learning Competency:
• Describe changes in materials based on the
effects of temperature. S3MT-Ih-j-4
Behavioral Learning Objective:
• Describe changes in materials based on the
effects of temperature.

What I Need to Do
Welcome to the world of magic and discoveries!
This activity sheet is specially created for you. It includes
hands-on activities which are designed to help you discover and
think critically about the wonders of Science. You will learn how
materials change their form based on the effects of temperature:
*Solid to gas
Key Concept:
Sublimation is the process of changing solid matter to gas
without passing the liquid state.
As you go through each of the activities, remember to have
fun. Be safe always!

Reminder:

Please ask teacher/adult assistance in doing this activity.

Problem: What changes happen in materials (solid) based on the

effect of temperature?
Materials Needed:
naphthalene ball piece of cloth
2 saucers hammer or regular-sized stone

What To Do:
1. Put a piece of naphthalene ball in a piece of cloth.

https://www.slideshare.net/edithahonradez/science-3-lm-unit-i-finalized-may-14-2014

2. Wrap it in a piece of cloth and tie it up.

https://www.slideshare.net/edithahonradez/science-3-lm-unit-i-finalized-may-14-2014
3. Using a small hammer or a regular-sized stone, pound the
contents inside the cloth into smaller pieces until they turn into
powder.

4. Divide the powdered naphthalene into two. Put half of the

powdered naphthalene in saucer 1 and the other half in
saucer 2.

https://www.slideshare.net/edithahonradez/science-3-lm-unit-i-finalized-may-14-2014

5. Place saucer 1 inside the classroom while placing saucer 2

outside under the direct heat of the sun.
6. Carefully observe what happens to the powdered
naphthalene in saucer 1 and saucer 2 after 15-30 minutes.

Guide Questions:

C 1. What form of material is a naphthalene ball?

A. Solid B. Liquid C. Gas
2. Describe the changes in the appearance of the powdered
naphthalene in saucer 1 and saucer 2. Input your answer inside
the box provided.

Saucer 1: (Powdered naphthalene placed inside the

classrozom)

Saucer 2: (Powdered naphthalene placed under direct

sunlight). Input your answer inside the box provided.

3. What causes the change in the appearance of powdered

naphthalene when placed under the direct heat of the sun?

C 4. Based on the experiment, the powdered naphthalene has

turned into what state of matter after being placed under the
heat of the sun for 30 minutes?

A. Solid B. Gas C. Liquid

What I Need to Remember

Matter exists in different forms. It may be

solid, liquid and gas. These materials
change their form when they undergo
temperature change. Materials may
change from solid to liquid, liquid to gas,
solid to gas and liquid to solid. Solid
materials change to gas without passing
through the liquid state when heated or
when it absorbs heat. This process is
called sublimation. Mothballs or
camphor undergo the process of
sublimation once they are exposed to
air. Other examples are dry ice, iodine
crystals, solid deodorizers like albatross
and solid air fresheners used at home
and in cars.
