CONDUCTORS OF HEAT AND ELECTRICITY

I. Introductory Concept

When you peel off the coating of an electrical wire, you will see copper wires
inside. Copper wire is the most widely used material for connecting electrical
devices. If you check your pots and pans in your kitchen, you will see that most of
them are made of stainless steel or aluminum. All these materials are conductors of
heat and electricity.

Conductors are materials that allow heat and electricity to pass through them
easily while insulators are materials that do not allow heat and electricity to pass
through them. Conductivity of materials depend on their composition. Water and
metals like iron, gold, silver, brass, steel, copper and nickel are good conductors while
nonmetals like materials that are made of plastic, silk, leather, glass, oil and rubber
are insulators.

II. LEARNING SKILLS/ COMPETENCY

• Discuss why some materials are good conductors of heat and electricity. (S5FE-IIIc-3)

III. ACTIVITIES

Activity 1
Direction: Encircle the letter of the best answer.

1. Which group is composed of insulators only?

a. Aluminum foil, iron nail, rubber c. glass, plastic, rubber
b. Brass, gold, silver d. leather, iron nail, pins

1
2. Which materials allow heat and electricity to flow freely through them?
a. Heat c. Insulators
b. Conductors d. none of the above

3. What is the other term for non-conductors?

c. Heat c. Insulators
d. Conductors d. none of the above

4. Which is a good conductor of heat and electricity?

a. Book c. metal fork
b. Ring d. coin

5. Which is NOT a good conductor of heat and electricity?

a. metal c. plastic pins
b. brass d. gold bars

Activity 2
Direction: Write C if the material in the picture is a conductor of heat and
electricity and I if it is an insulator.
