Electroscope Experimental Design
I. Objectives
1. To create an electroscope to detect electric charge
2. To be able to explain how the principles of induction, conduction, and grounding apply
to the electroscope
3. To tell if an object has a charge through testing it by the use of electroscope

II. Materials
- Glass jar with lid - Copper wire
- Straw/ ball pen cover - Pliers
- Aluminum foil Scissors -Cutter
- Comb/Balloon ( anything that you want use for the testing)

III. Procedure
1. Start by punching a hole in the center of the jar lid using a cutter.
2. Place the straw or the ball pen cover (alternative) inside the hole.
3. Get the copper wire and remove the rubber that was covering the wire using a blade.
4. Put the copper wire inside the straw or ball pen cover.
5. Using a pliers, make a hook at the bottom part of the wire On the other hand, twist the
upper part of the wire into a spiral loop. Make sure that the bottom part of the wire will not
reach nor touch the jar’s end.
6. Cut two small strips of aluminum foil and place it in the hook.
7. Attach the lid in the glass jar. Ensure that all parts were nicely glued and properly placed.
8. For the testing, rub the comb on your hair.
9. Place the comb next to the copper coils. Observe what happens to the foil inside the jar.
10. Repeat step 8-9 with any other materials you would like to test.

IV. Conclusion
After performing the experiment, it was concluded that the materials with the greatest ability to
hold charge will cause the pieces of foil in the electroscope to move the most. With the construction of
the electroscope, the copper wire was coiled so that we can create more area for the transfering of
electrons. Moreover, the experiment also showed the concept of induction wherein the electrons was
transferred to one surface to another without touching. As the object with charge was placed near the
wire, the energy goes down to the bottom which sows the idea of conduction. Hence, we also concluded
that the thicker the wire, the better because it provides more room for electrons to move.

Furthermore, we determined that the two small trips of foil that was place in the wire is significant
to the topic. As the charges flows downwards into them, the strips of foil will repel each other. The
negative charges push against each other, causing the pieces of foil to repel. On the other hand, it was a
basic knowledge that negative charges repel each other while positive charges attract each other. When
an object such as the balloon was placed near the coils, the reaction of the foil strips with be repulsion.

Lastly, as a learner that is used in learning things through audio-visual presentations and live
demonstrations, the experiment is considered to be a success. Based on the activity, all of the objectives
was completed. The preparation, process and post proper is also significant to the learning for it showed
the detailed steps while also explaining concepts to us through experience. The experiment was
considered to be crucial to the development of the students, especially in the particular topics in physics.
