    1. Why did the Spaniards brand us as indolent?

    One of the reasons the Spaniards labeled us indolent is the climate. Because here in the


    Philippines we are closer to the tropics so hot weather can mean
    that Filipinos are not doing what they are doing.

    2. How did Rizal and other Filipino scholars defend the Filipinos against this labeling
    from Spain? Why?

    He defends the Filipinos by saying that they are not inherently lazy because they were
    already engaged in economic activities such as farming and trading before the Spanish
    arrived. Inertia, therefore, has deeper causes, such as abuse and discrimination.
