Essay

Based on the readings and my understanding about why the Spaniards branded us as
indolent is because according to Dr. Jose Rizal the major factors is such as the climate
and social disorders. But Rizal defense all of the accusation of Spaniard about the Filipino
being indolence. According Spaniard say Filipino have a little love for work, factor for
being indolent is climate. A hot, climate requires of the individual quiet and rest just as
cold incites to labor and action. Another reason is due to forced labor, many men have
been sent to shipyard to construct vessel and other are being send in abroad to fight
wars for Spain or for expedition so the population decrease and some of the farmers
remained here is hiding in mountain so now the farm are being abandon and that
Spaniard reason why they called as indolent.

How did Rizal and the other Filipino scholars defend the Filipinos against this labeling from
Spain? Why? To defend the Filipino for labeling from Spain Rizal wrote the Indolence of
the Filipino a socio-political essay published in La solidaridad in Madrid in 1890. It was
written by José Rizal as a response to the accusation of Indio or Malay indolence. He
defends the Filipinos by saying that they are by nature not indolent, because in fact, even
before the arrival of Spaniards, Filipinos have been engaged in economic activities. And
according to Rizal, all the causes of indolence can be reduced to two factors. The first
factor is the limited training and education Filipino natives receive. Segregated from
Spaniards, Filipinos do not receive the same opportunities that are available to the
foreigners. They are taught to be inferior. The second factor is the lack of a national
sentiment of unity among them. Because Filipinos think they are inferior, they submit to
the foreign culture and do everything to imitate it. The solution, according to Rizal, would
be education and liberty.
