The Indolence of Filipinos by Jose Rizal

A Contextual Analysis

The Indolence of Filipinos, which is more particularly known as La Indolencia de los

Filipinos, by Jose Rizal was written to explain and somehow defend the side of the Filipinos and
the verdict that the Filipinos were born indolent . The literary piece was composed of the
convictions as to why the Filipinos, at the time of the Spanish Colonization, was considered lazy
or did have that much love for their work or job.

Rizal pointed out that the Filipinos were very diligent concerning their work or jobs before
the arrival of the Spaniards. Rizal implied that the Spaniards were the cause of the indolence of
the Filipinos. He backed this up with convictions which are very evident amongst the Filipino
society during the Spanish era. Rizal’s first conviction was all about the Galleon Trade . He pointed
out that small businesses and industries closed because of the inauguration of the Galleon Trade.
With this fact, we would be able to infer that the Filipino businessmen were discourage due to the
closing down of their businesses . Next thing Rizal pointed out was the polo y servicio. Because
of forced labor, the Filipino worker’s love for their work was abolished since most are forced to do
something against their own will. The third conviction was the lack of protection of the Filipino
people by Spain. Due to the lack of protection, the Filipinos were forced to fight back to dangerous
forces with little to no firearms which caused the destruction of their own properties . Rizal pointed
out that because of this, the lack of interest of the Filipinos to work for their betterment was
worsened. Next thing that Rizal pointed out was the lack of knowledge of the Filipinos in improving
their own and their own agriculture and economy. Next is the introduction of the Filipinos to the
Spaniard’s entertainment which is gambling . The Filipinos were drag into the world of gambling
which lessened their love to do work. The friars also introduced the concept that it was easier for
poor people to enter heaven which eradicated the Filipinos drive to better themselves and just
stay poor throughout their life. One conviction that Rizal pointed out was about the taxes . The
taxes were extremely high for the Filipinos and they were not able to make a use out of it since
those taxes were used by the colonizing country alone . Lastly, the Filipinos were somehow able
to pick up the habit of the Spaniards which is that they lack interest in going to work or work in
general. The Spaniards stay in work for a short period of time and Rizal pointed out that the
Filipinos, in a large scale of possibility, was influenced by them .

In conclusion, the Spaniards had a great contribution to the indolence of the Filipino
people. This literary piece eradicated the idea that the Filipinos were naturally born indolent. It is
clarified that the Filipinos were hardworking before . Though, we can not put all the blame to the
Spaniards. We are all partially responsible for being ‘indolent’ as we are before and today since
we did not do anything to prevent this from happening.
