13. Camshafts and timing

13.1 General Description

1. Camshaft drive gear

2. Crankshaft gear wheel
3. Bigger and smaller cams-
haft drive intermediate gear

Flywheel end

Fig. 13-01
Engine timing is done by "gear train", gears are totally integrated into
the engine block, flywheel side. Both camshafts are driven by a gear,
fixed to their extremities (Fig. 13-01, item 1).
The crankshaft gear (Fig. 13-01, item 2) is screwed assembled on the
crankshaft. Timing adjustment is done with relative adjustments of in-
termediate gears (Fig. 13-01, item 3). These ones are screwed as-
sembled together (5 bolts). These gears positions are adjustable on
360° (See Chap.13.2.2).
The camshafts rotate in the same direction as the crankshaft one,
but with a speed less than the half that this one (engine speed
reference).

Note : Driving components and clearances are the same on both sides (A
& B).

13.2 Intermediate gears and camshafts gears

Intermediate gears are carburized.
Bearing lubrication is done by lube oil feed channels, linked by drilled
holes in shaft and gears.

13.2.1 Engine timing driving train maintenance

In order to check gear train condition, measure teeth inter-gaps and
bearings clearances (see Chap. 6). Wear precocious detection can
avoid serious damages. Contact your Wärtsilä representative in
case of any doubt.

13.2.2 Timing adjustment (Fig. 13-03 and 13-04)

Timing adjustment is done through relative positions between inter-
mediate gears and camshafts ones. In order to adjust the timing,
please remove from cylinder unit reference the cylinder head cover.

Note : Wrong timing adjustment can be the root cause of bad engine run-
ning, and serious failures.

Those settings are adjusted into the factory shop and do not have to
be modified except for absolute necessity (big maintenance or after
failure).
This procedure can be applied on both sides of the engine (A & B).
1 Choose a cylinder as a reference (A1 or B1 in general), then
adjust piston on TDC firing position and follow instructions given in
Chapter 06.
2 Check on the flywheel edge that angular engraving values
are correct and that adequate engraved indication is in front of
the arrow.
3 Remove intermediate gears covers.
4 Turn the engine until the pushrod roller back side faces the
reference cylinder admission cam back side.
5 Adust to zero the valves clearances of reference cylinder,
see Chapter 12.
6 Install the SPC 8480007 (Fig. 13-02) adustment tool. The
comparator holder is fixed to the admission rocker stem (right
stem when you are in front of the cylinder head). The opposite
tool on which the comparator will touch is fixed as shown on Fig.
13-02.

7 Adjust the comparator needle to zero, be sure that the com-

parator stem is not too close from the stop and provides a suffi-
cient stroke (20 mm at least).
8 Turn the engine on the normal direction until the cam
reaches the lift value according to Chapter 13.3.
9 Check that camshaft stays on this position until point 12.
10 Unscrew the intermediate gear screws (item 17) in order to
uncouple it from the camshaft.
11 Turn the engine into the normal direction in order to reach
the angular position (flywheel) according to the Chapter 13.3
value. Be sure that the camshaft did not turned during this
operation.
12 Timing value verification :
· The TDC graduation on flywheel should be 5° after the ar-
row.
· The timing value (valve lift) corresponds to the recom-
mended value (Chap. 13.3).
13 Tighten the intermediate gear screws (item 17) according
to Chap. 7 values.

Note : Proceed on the same way for B side.

Last verifications :
After having adjusted B side camshaft timing, do the job again on A
side without untightening anything in order to check correct settings,
then perform this verification on B side.

13.4 Camshafts gears removing (Fig. 13-03 and 13-04)

1 Remove the flywheel.
2 Remove all auxiliaries parts from the camshafts free-end
side (WECS encoder on A side for example). Beware of angular
setting of WECS encoder, see Chapter 23.
3 Remove camshafts free end sides covers, on both sides.
4 Untighten and remove camshafts gears screws.
5 Remove camshafts gears through the engine block inspec-
tion doors.
6 Remove intermediate gears screws (Fig. 13-03, item 16),
and covers (Fig. 13-03, item 19).
7 Remove the intermediate gears screws (Fig. 13-03, item 17)
and also the intermediate gears (Fig. 13-03, item 21) through the
engine block inspection doors.

Note : During gears handling, take care to not hurt or let them fall.

13.5 Crankshaft timing gear

The crankshaft gear wheel (Fig. 13-03, item 6) is screwed on the
crankshaft.
Remove and assembly need to be done by Wärtsilä.

13.6 Camshaft gear assembly

1 The camshaft gear assembly is the opposite of the
removing one.
2 Repeat timing adjustment (see Chap. 13.2) after camshaft
gear replacement.
