Preguntas con respuestas cortas

1. What are the three principal types of diagrams used by process engineers to describe the
flow of chemicals in a process? Make a brief description of each one.

BFD: it’s the easiest one because you just need to understand the process, it’s just the flows
and the blocks with the machines (only the name).

PFD: medium one, you have the process with a specific model for each one of the machines,
in the flows you include all of the information, you also add bombs or valves.

P&ID: hardest one, because it’s almost the blueprints for the factory, all of the above of the
PFD including the types of pipes with all the information.

2. On which of these diagrams would you expect to see the following items: a. The
temperature and pressure of a process stream b. An overview of a multiple-unit process c. A
major control loop d. A pressure indicator e. A pressure-relief valve

A PFD.

3. A problem has occurred in the measuring element of a level-indicating controller in a

batch reactor. To what principal diagram should you refer to troubleshoot the problem?

To an P&ID because you get to see better if there’s a problem in the process line, and get to
see why the problem could occur.

4. Why is it important for a process engineer to be able to review a three-dimensional model

(actual or virtual/electronic) of the plant prior to the construction phase of a project?

To see if it’s reliable and viable.

5. What is augmented reality? Give one example of it. Do you consider this could be a useful
tool for process design? Why?

It is a technology that lets you see a 360° environment, for example the VR that you can play
video games as if you were inside it. Yes, because it can give us an idea of how the factory
could be constructed.

6.
An P&ID.

Elaboración de diagramas

1. Realizar el BFD del equipo que te sea asignado en el laboratorio. Deberá contener la
información básica y cumplir con las convenciones de los diagramas de bloques.

2. Realizar el PFD del equipo que te sea asignado en el laboratorio con algún software (e.g.
Aspen Plus, https://app.diagrams.net/,
https://online.visualparadigm.com/es/diagrams/templates/process-flow-diagram/chemicalsm
anufacturing/). Deberá contener la información básica y cumplir con las convenciones de los
diagramas de flujo.
