What is Advanced Material ?

An Advanced material can be said to be a material

which has engineered properties created through
the development of specialized process and
synthesis technology.
Properties of Advanced Materials
Generally they are:
 Novel
 Improved properties over its replacement
 Weight
 Strength
 Formability
 Conductivity
 Etc..
Some examples of Advanced
materials
•Light Metals
• Titanium
• Magnesium
• Aluminium
•Composites
• Carbon Fiber
• Kevlar
• Nano Composites
• Metal laminates
 •Steels
• Dual phase steels
• Trip steels
• Bake hardening steels
• •But, there are many more with very specific applications.
Why their place in manufacturing Industry

Advanced Materials have improved properties over its replacement.

 Example :
 −Weight
 −Strength
 −Formability
 −Conductivity
 −Etc..
(However, the cost/benefit ratio of utilizing advanced materials often swing a
decision in their favor.)
Why their place in manufacturing Industry

Currently both the Automotive and Aerospace industries are facing similar
challenges:
 Needs for:
 Improved fuel economy
 Improved Performance
 Reduced emissions
(Current body structure designs using “standard” materials are also nearing
peak optimization.)
Body structure weight reductions
Benefits of some advanced materials

Magnesium
−22% the weight of iron, and 65% of aluminium.
−magnesium alloys are around 50% the strength of steel,
−Stiffer than most plastics,
−are subject to corrosion.
The world market for magnesium currently at 450,000 tones per year and is
increasing by 5%
Benefits of some advanced materials

 Titanium
• Titanium is as strong as steel, and is half the weight.
• Its also very corrosion resistant,
• has a high melting point.
• Requires specialized machining and annealing processes
 Titanium market growth is extremely cyclical, depending on
the aerospace industry activity.
Benefits of some advanced materials

Carbon Fibre.
 light weight (75 percent lighter than steel),
 High stiffness Youngsmodulus of up to 300
GPa(12 times that of steel)
 more durable (infinite fatigue life within design
parameters)
Benefits of some advanced materials

Nano composites
up to 98% stiffness
improvement,
higher Heat Deformation Temp .
same impact strength
Improved fire resistance
Example: Football (22 cm), Pet flea
(1mm), Human hair (80 µm), Red blood cells
(7µm), Virus particles (150nm)
Advantages

Understand the opportunities.

Add value to your company
Develop knowledge your global competitor does not have.
Develop experience with working with Advanced Materials to lead your
customer.
 Value Add to you current products −Improved tool life, etc..
