Holidays Celebrated in May (Uk)

May Day

May Day is traditionally a public holiday in the UK celebrated on or around 1st May. In
2022 the May Day bank holiday will take place on Monday 2nd May.

With the advent of Christianity, May Day hung on as one of the few holidays not associated
with religion. In rural Britain, celebrations were associated with the fertility of spring and
the start of summer. The seeds of the new crops had been planted, farm labourers were given
a day off - and they made the most of it!

They celebrate May Day with flower crowns, maypole dancing, and by making flower
baskets to share with loved ones. In Hawaii, May Day is known as “Lei Day”, a celebration
of the aloha spirit and the giving of the flower.
Victoria s Day History

Following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, May 24 was made a legal holiday to be
known as "Victoria Day", a date to remember the late queen, who was deemed the "Mother
of Confederation", and, in 1904, the same date was by imperial decree made Empire Day
throughout the British Empire.

Victoria Day honours and commemorates the birth of Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria was
born on May 24th, 1819 in Britain. She ascended to the throne at the young age of 18.
During her reign, she governed the Dominion of Canada until she proclaimed the
Confederation of its first 4 provinces in 1867. She selected Ottawa as the national capital.
In Canada, Queen Victoria is often referred to as the Mother of the Confederation.

Victoria Day was originally declared a celebration in 1854, making it Canada's oldest state
holiday. It was officially proclaimed in 1901 after the queen's death. It is observed annually
on the Monday before May 25th.
Mother's Day in UK

The UK has a different date than the USA because the date of Mother's Day in the UK is
connected to Easter, which changes every year. The UK, Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, Isle
of Man and Nigeria all have the same date for Mother's Day

Mother's Day is not a public holiday. It falls on Sunday, March 19, 2023 and most
businesses follow regular Sunday opening hours in United Kingdom. Mothers are
honoured on Mother's Day in the UK

Mother's Day is a special day honouring mothers and it's celebrated in loads of countries
throughout the world. It is also known as Mothering Sunday in the UK.
