GUIDELINES IN TEACHING THE SUBJECTS (SH)

(Rev March 2018)

A. Academics

Language (English & Bahasa)


1. Use the video CD & cassette CD.
2. Some of the Arts Activities/Drama should be integrated into the subjects.
3. Use the assessment resource for evaluation (new resources are available at the library or you
may design your own). Must provide writing comprehension.
4. Selection of graded reading program should be introduced in each level. At least 1 selected book
each week for appropriate level for home reading. (Book review)
5. May provide video/record voices/photos as proofs for progress.
6. Composition writing (giving essay task) must be conducted every week to students for the whole
academic year. The minimum words per year level is targeted hereunder:
 Year 1 – 50 words
 Year 2 – 75 words
 Year 3 – 100 words
 Year 4 – 150 words
 Year 5 – 250 words
 Year 6 – 350 words
 Year 7 – 450words
 Year 8 – 550 words
 Year 9 – 650 words
 Year 10- 750 words
 For Chinese, half of the targets in English will be accomplished

7. Spelling (provide spelling list for 8 weeks/term), grammar/phonics, composition and


comprehension tests should be done weekly. Schedule should be provided.
8. Reading and listening home project.
9. Listening and reading drill should be done every day (English; refer to Language score list)
10. Give homework every day.
11. Extra resources for Spelling, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Composition and Grammar.
12. Extra practice (HW) for composition writing alternately with comprehension activity every week.
13. Phonics and Bahasa Ejaan (Reading and Writing in Bahasa) should be taught in the first month
of year 1 only.
14. English Dictionary should be used from Year 1-3.
15. Online English (Ignitia) for Year 4-onwards

Chinese
1. For AY 2017-2018, the following books will be used for each level:
Chinese 1A-Year 1 Chinese 1B-Year 2 Chinese 2A-Year 3 Chinese 2B-Year 4
Chinese 3B-Year 5 Chinese 4B-Year 6

2. Extra books for Writing Practice are provided for Year 1 & 2 (Writing Practice 1A, Writing Practice
1B)
3. Chinese flash cards are provided from Year 1-4 ( 1-A, !-B, 2A, 2B )
4. Listening drill/whole reading should be done together each time teacher enters class through
teacher’s voice/CD reading
5. Provide samples of Chinese writing (pi hua) in square papers and students will do as homework
6. Always write on a big paper for any new vocabularies/words introduced. Paste at Chinese centre
7. One sub-theme story is usually written on 3 pages. Teacher is advised to teach one page at a
time, learning all the details on vocabularies/writing/grammar, etc
8. Chinese teacher should always speak Chinese in the class.
9. Chinese teacher should introduce Chinese greetings before the start of the class.

 Year 2 – 30 words

11. Video for recitation (Speaking- download via You tube)
12. Chinese CD/textbook for listening- use question and answer after
13. Reading from Textbook. Read without the PINYIN starting from Y4-6. Must use rubrics.
14. Writing activities will be in the form of quizzes and summative test.

Maths Alive (Main subject)


1. Periods are varied in each year level. Estimated four (4) periods in the lower primary and
increases going to middle and upper levels.
2. Teachers will have to use extra resource book for enrichment activity and evaluation as
additional exercises for the children to master the skills taught in Maths.
3. Homework should be given every day.
4. Maths test should be scheduled every week.
5. Multiplication table should be introduced and memorized as early as Y1 up to the upper
level.

Mathematics (Rigby) Integrated to Maths Alive

1. Rigby Primary Mathematics is integrated in Mathematics classes; to be completed for the whole
academic year. Year 1 will use Rigby 2, Year 2 will use Rigby 3 and so on.
2. New wave mental mathematics are introduced throughout a year (Y1 use book B,Y2 use book C,
and so on).
3. Extra resources for practices are provided, under Nelson & Oxford publishers.
4. Teaching aids should be obtained from inventory PIC and orders of purchases should be done in
advance (beginning of each term).
5. Sample of Assessment should be done in advance together with the submission of lesson
planning. Assessment should accommodate 40% of higher thinking questions.
6. All teaching aids should be displayed at math center during periods of discuss for particular
chapter. Should be removed and changed for the next chapter/module.
7. Record of work should be updated and signed by Academic Supervisor monthly.
8. Concept about dollars and cents should be eliminated.
9. Produce practical products from application of concept. (Y2 and above)
10. Teaching aids could be borrowed and used to support concepts.
11. Aware the reason why some modules require the skill of calculation using calculators (provided
by parents, this applies from year 1 – 6).
12. Refer to math score list to explain.
13. For upper level Mathematics (Y7-above), the teacher may not prepare lesson plans. Follow the
syllabi found in the CDs of the TRBs and highlight the activities that will be done in class.
14. Rigby Maths will be used for the following:
Year 1- Rigby 3; Year 2- Rigby 3 (AY 2018-2019)
15. Ignitia (Maths 6) will end in December, the succeeding term shall use the review
materials for UAN.

Science+ Health and Value


1. Use Australian supporting resource primary science book 1-6.
2. Use teaching aids according to different chapter.
3. Propose needed items for purchase before starting of a term.
4. Sample of assessment should be done in advance together with the submission of lesson
planning. Assessment should accommodate 40% of higher thinking questions.
5. Science hand-on products should be creative, impressive and expensive.
6. Students of year 1 – 4 should do experiments in own classroom except for messy ones. Year 5
and above may use science lab as reflected in the schedule.
7. May provide some photos/video as proofs (contact PIC of documentation).
8. Refer to science score list to explain.
9. For upper level Science (Y7-above), the teacher does not have to make a syllabi and should make
use of the lesson plan prepared for the subjects in the CDs of the TRBs
10.Health and Value is added to the Science subject for 1 period

Society+PKN + IPS

1. Eliminate concepts which are repeated in Character Building, Science,


2. Assessments should be done more on practical (70%), concept of theory could be assessed for
30%. Assessment should accommodate 40% of higher thinking questions.
3. Students of Year 1 – 3 may use kindergarten playroom for pretend-play (fill in the schedule
form).
4. Kindergarten teaching aids or items in dramatics center could be borrowed to emphasize society
concepts.
5. May provide photos/recorded voices in cassette for proofs of development.
6. National songs should be sang during the Society subject. Selection of the song should changed
every two weeks.
7. Refer to society score list to explain.

Note: Grades in PKN and PLBJ will be the same as the grade given in Society. Teachers will have to
integrate the subject content of this in their society class.

8. Academic Enhancement (Optional)


 Elective (PKN and PLBJ) – 1 period. Books will only be provided to teachers. Students are not
provided with textbook.
 There will be no outputs to be produced, no study trips, and no homework.
 This is the solution given on the government requirement to study these subjects/topics.
 Assessment will be done in the classroom only.
 The order of presentation will be:
PKN and PLBJ will be allocated for 1 period only in a week throughout the year.

Art & Craft /Technology and Enterprise/ Home Economics (Year 7-above)
1. Use Australian primary art as resources (Y1 – 6). Assessment could be obtained within the
resource itself (CD will be provided).
2. For Technology and Enterprise, the following resources should be used: lower primary resource
(year 1 & 2), middle primary (year 3 & 4), upper primary (year 5 & 6)
3. Products should be creative, impressive and expensive.
4. At least 2 art and craft and 1 technology and enterprise outputs in a term.
5. Products should be displayed along corridor, labeled properly, brought home at the end of the
term.
6. All products should be brought home to parents in presentable ways, appreciated by parents. Ex.
Canvas paintings will be framed.
7. Budgets for projects should be proposed in the beginning of a term.
8. All students must utilize the Art & Craft room as reflected on the schedule.
9. Syllabi will be prepared but not lesson plans. Choose the themes that relate with the main
subjects like Science, English, Mathematics, and Society that require practical and/or tangible
projects or activities.
10. Year 7 & 8 will use Home Economics resource 1. Year 9 & 10 will use Home Economics resource
2.
11. Evaluation sheet should be prepared or presented for each activity. Curriculum may be modified
according to students needs such as sewing, plumbing, electricity, building, cooking (Yr 7 &
above).
12. May provide photos for proofs of development.
13. Prepare budget proposal for cooking and other activities of students in class submit to office
before start of classes.
14. Students are not allowed to use cutters in the project making. Teachers are the ones who will
cut the styro or card board for the students.
15. Select a project to be made from the related subjects.
16. Encourage students to design, to revise their own to enhance the activity in the Primary Art.
17. Refer to score list to explain.

Culture (Arts and Crafts, Music, Technology and Enterprise alternate with
Computer)
1. Try to use classroom as much as possible (Y1-6) instead of music room. Unless required for a
space or using musical instruments (Seek approval from the AS.)
2. Year 2 and year 5 resources consist of 1 CD.
3. Year 1,3,4,6 resources consist of 2 CDs.
4. Provide assessment which consists of 30% theory and 70% practical.
5. Able to present performance once a month of assembly/chapel time (use assembly resource).
6. May provide cassette for proofs of development.
7. Music performance should be done once a month during the Chapel and Assembly Time.
8. Refer to score list to explain.
9. Culture will use the Seni Budaya book Art, Craft, Music and Dance. Alternately taught every other
week with Technology and Enterprise plus Computer.

Computer (ICT)
1. The subject is called computer in primary. It is called IT (Information Technology) in Upper level
(Y7 – above).
2. Students should be lead to computer room (in library) for teaching concepts. Individual
practice/evaluation could be done in class room.
3. Students of Year 7 and above are allowed to bring laptop on assigned days. All teachings could
be done in classroom. Tables are provided for each student.
4. Laptops should be used under strict teacher supervision in classroom where laptops are placed
on computer tables in a row. Teacher is checking from behind.
5. No laptops left unattended in classroom or any school areas. Laptops should be kept in a locker
(provided by school).
6. Laptops are used only during lessons under teacher supervision.
7. Assessments should consist of 30% theory and 70% application. Rubrics of evaluation should be
provided.
8. Refer to score list to explain.

Character Building

1. Student will provide a English Bible (Children) Year 1-3; English Bible (NIV) for Year 4-6 version
and keep it in the classroom. Read bible every day.
2. Year 1 student must join the Preschool during Chapel.
3. Sing Christian song every day.
4. Have a golden verse every week according to theme and memorize it.
5. Provide assessments consist of 30% theory and 70% practical.
6. Homework should involve parents. (Home-School project)
7. Homework should reflect understanding of concept through practical assessment (refer to TRB).
8. Teaching materials in textbook should be backed up with practical activities which are
programmed the whole year for each grade level (refer to the CB program by the Guidance
Counselor).

9. Academic Enhancement:
 CB Program – extended program from CB subject conducted by the CB teacher.
 Application of the concepts learned in the Character Building subject.
 At the beginning of the term, plan and budget must be proposed.
 Refer to the guide of CB program for a year. Schedule is also planned that at least one
activity will be conducted in one term.
Note: Teacher’s may have an option to have the home link program as well if the assigned
CB Program is quite hard to implement. It may be done alternately. (CB Program & Home link
Program.
 Chapel, Character Building and House Program – 2 periods in a week.
 The proposed activities for the whole academic year are prepared at the beginning of the
classes.
 The integration of chapel and house program will involve the following:
o Bible discussion
o Health and Values B-G Australian Resources
o Focus on prevailing event/theme of the month

Physical Education
1. Make the syllabus – refer to government syllabus.
2. Make the lesson plan – use TRB. K-2 lower primary, 3-4 middle primary, 5-6 upper primary.
3. Advance proposal for purchasing equipment.
4. Provided rubric for assessments.
5. May provide photos for proofs of progress.
6. Use basket ball court in sunny days and function hall during rainy days.
7. Refer to score list to explain.
B. 1. GUIDELINES IN PREPARING AND CONDUCTING EXAMINATIONS

Note: Term Exam shall be administered within four (4) days for Term 2 and 4 putting the
Mandarin at the last day schedule; and three (3) days for Term 1 and 3. See samples
below:

Mandarin
Before the Examination

1. Exam paper must not use the SH letter head.


2. Exam papers should follow the:
60%- easy and average questions (20% MCQ, 20% fill-in the blanks, 20% short answered
questions)
40%- higher order thinking questions (essays)
3. All outputs pertaining to daily test, written exercises of a particular subject should be
returned every after the activity is done and information regarding this should be written in
the agenda book.
4. Review materials with different test parts should be sent one week before the test.
5. Mock test or review test should be administered one week before the test to ascertain
students are already prepared. Should a difficulty is observed among the students, daily
review should be given towards the exam day.
6. Two weeks before the exam, all questionnaires must be submitted for approval.
7. Final copying should be done after doing the corrections.
8. The reproduction of test questions must be under close supervision of the Academic
Supervisor (AS), or any teacher who is designated by the AS.
9. The supervisor must arrange, label and keep them properly ready for the examination.
10. Assign teachers to be the invigilators.
11. Make the seating arrangement of students together with the teachers one day before.

During the Examination

1. The Academic Supervisor must provide the rules of administering the exam.
2. The Supervisor will distribute the exam papers to the invigilators for each class from day 1 to
day 3 and must circulate to ensure the proper administration of the exam.
3. Teachers must be in their respective classrooms 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
4. The gate will be opened to admit students at 8:00 AM.
5. Prayers must be the outset of the examination to be led by invigilators.
6. Inside the class, there must be one main invigilator and one proctor.
7. Instructions must be given before the start of the exam.
8. SH paper must be used as answer sheets for the exam.
9. Translation of instruction and materials during exam are absolutely not allowed.
10. Supporting teachers should not be allowed to help. Must guide the student’s behavior only
under her care.
11. Write the time limit of the exam per subject on the board.
12. Should remind the students to stay silent/observe proper decorum while the exam is in
progress.
13. Should there be confusion, like unreadable lines or clerical errors on the exam paper the
proctor will consult the subject teacher for clarification.
14. After each exam, students are not allowed to loiter in the corridor or at the playground.
Instead they must be instructed to stay put/to go to the library, to review for the next exam.
The invigilator must see to it that dismissal will be done uniformly as scheduled.
15. Students are allowed to go out during break time for eating.
16. In the case of the last exam for the day, students must still wait in the classroom before the
pick-up. School shall be held liable in case of emergency within the official time.
17. Request the students to tidy-up the class before going –out.
18. At 12:00, all students must be dismissed.

After the Examination

1. Invigilators must gather, arrange, compile and hand-in the exam papers to the subject
teachers.

2. GUIDELINES IN USING SH STUDENTS STATIONERIES

1. Agenda book is used for the following:


 Informing parents about their student’s concerns
 For homework and assignment announcement
 Writing the coverage of the test both for daily test and term exam
 For review materials/mock test information
 Scores of student’s daily test/unit test
 Communicating tool for any announcement deemed necessary for the parents

2. Portfolio shall be used for the following:


 Report card/Report book of the student
 Daily Test/Exam papers with markings
 Project outputs/Arts and Crafts
 Student's best pieces of writings
 Photos of students in a field trip
 Video recordings of readings or performances
 Composition writing for English and Bahasa
 Book review/Summary report in CCA
 Creative writing, including stories, poems, songs and scripts

3. Student folder
 For daily home works from different subjects

4. SH Test Paper
 For daily test and term test
 Composition writing
 Home works/Assignment
 All other activities of the core subjects (writing, sketching and etc)
5. Textbooks and Workbooks
 Books should have no ready answers been written.(Teacher must inform the
parents via agenda book and write in the office book to inform parents)
 Books should stay in the school during weekdays and brought home every Friday
for review. No book means he/she will be placed in the library or in the faculty
room.
 Photocopying of some pages of the books is not allowed.
 Workbook activities should coincide with the textbook topic for the day or week.
B. MISCELLANEOUS
 Graduation Passing requirement: Core Subjects- English, Maths, Science, Society and
IS
 Minimum of 95 % attendance
 Three subjects failed in the Core Subjects mean- Retained
 Chinese may not be considered as a requirement for passing
 Ratio: 40 (Semester 1) and 60 (Semester 2) to determine the Final grade
in the current year level
 Participation of at least one with “B” score in Co-Curricular Activities (CCA)

 Exams are classified into: (Year1-5)


Term 1 – UTS (Midterm Exam)
Term 2 - UAS (End of Semester Exam)
Term 3 - UTS (Midterm Exam)
Term 4 - UAS (End of Semester Exam)

 For year 6: The whole year coverage shall be divided into 3 terms only (term 1-3) for
all subjects while term 4 is the preparation of Government Exam.
 The school exam (Ujian Sekolah-US) shall be given in any day of term 4 using the
whole year coverage.

 Break down coverage for term exam are as follows:


Term 1- 100% term 1 materials
Term 2- All materials of Term 1 and Term 2
Term 3- 100% term 3 materials
Term 4- All materials of Term 3 and Term 4

 Bigger font size (16 or 18) for Year 1 exam should be use. Students will write the
answers on the exam papers.
 Passing condition: Students who may fail for 3 core subjects shall not be promoted to
the next level. MPP shall be determined by the school in parallel to the Government’s
Guidelines.
 All daily test results should be sent home for parents’ signature and return back to
school for filing in the portfolio.
 Review must be given one week before the test. Review test materials and mock-up
test should be sent home to parents.
 Subject coverage for the day should be written in the agenda to make it known to
parents.
 More quizzes should be given to students within the term preferably 10 times
maximum.
 70% only for the homework and practical outputs.
 Books like Click Start, CB, Society, Maths Alive and others should be used everyday.
 Report books which are not taken during the PTC should be endorsed to the AS.
 CCA activities must conduct an evaluation in a form of questions after the activities.
 Additional worksheets should be provided to students.
 Fieldtrip/Class trip/Academic trip could be conducted at least one time for all subjects
in each term.
 CENTERLIST of Activities should be provided in each center.
 Program for the year by the Guidance Counselor.
 Weekly CB Program may adopt resources (Health and Values Y1-6)
 House Program may include: Practical Activities of 7 Habits, Cooking together, Making
simple videos or movies.
 One Christian song during assembly.
 Encourage students to enroll more than 1 CCA.
