EDU560: Curriculum studies and Practices in Secondary Education

Assignment 1 (40 marks-10%)

Semester 2, 2020

Instructions

1. The students will collect the required documents for this assignment from the schools of their choice.
2. Collect a copy of two Year 9 syllabi related to the majors. (Soft copy or hard copy)
The following disciplines will have to use the Year 11 syllabi together with the Year 9 syllabi related to the
majors:
 Geo/Hist to collect the Year 9 Social Science and Year 11 History.
 Math/Phy to collect the Year 9 Maths and the Year 11 Physics.
 Math/IS and Math/Comp to collect the Year 9 Maths and the Year 11Computer Studies.
 Bio/Chem to collect the Year 9 Basic Science and the Year 11 Biology.
 Acc/Eco to collect the Year 9 Commercial Studies and either the Year 11 Accounting or Economics.
 Eng/Hist and Eng/Geo to collect the Year 9 English and the Year 9 Social Science.
 HOMECO to collect the Year 9 and 10 syllabi and will have to work on both the food & nutrition and
textiles component.
 IA and Agriculture to collect the Year 9 and 10 syllabi and will have to work on a theory and
practical aspect of the topics.

3. Collect a copy of two Year 9 (or as stated above) Learning and Teaching Programme (LTP) or Scheme of
Work. These documents will be required to attempt the following activities. (1m)

4. Select two topics or scope of content from the two syllabi or LTP and develop the following:
a) Student’s notes related to the topic. This should include all the learning concepts, terms, values, attitudes
and all related processes. The notes must be type using words appropriate to the level of students. (5m)
b) Two individual class activity related to the topic. (One activity based on theory and one on practical
component) This should include instructions/ questions as well as likely answers. (10m)
c) An individual research activity related to the topic. This should include instructions/ questions as well as
likely answers.(5m)
d) A group activity related to the topic. This should include instructions/ questions as well as likely answers.

e) A motivational activity that will be used during the introductory phase of the lesson. This should include
instructions/ questions as well as likely student responses. (5m)

5. Provide a list of reference, books, and resources related to the topic (more than 5 materials) The list should
have a description of how the materials will be used during the lesson or the teaching of the selected topic.
Books and electronic sources are to be fully referenced.(5m)

6. The students will be required to compile a portfolio of all the activities and submit to the Tutor. (4m)

Due date: Week 13. (Tutors will decide on the exact due dates for their groups)
