Unit Description
Students will have the opportunity to practice their English skills in this unit as they
discuss the importance of nationalism and love of the country. At the end of this unit,
students will have the opportunity to express their thoughts in response to what they
have listened, practiced, and observed.
Learning objectives

B. Listening: Note-taking and symbols


When taking notes in a lecture, symbols for frequently used words, phrases, or names
are useful.
Below is the common symbols and abbreviations that you can use when taking note
while listening to a lecture.

The following is an excerpt from an interview with the Indonesia Minister of Finance
– Sri Mulyani. Read the excerpt and see how symbols are used in the student’s note.

We have to invest in human capital and that's why our spending on education and health and
social protection is very important because sharing prosperity and growing middle class
will make Indonesia to become a good middle-income country ... Indonesia has much stronger
fundamental. We have the largest reserve now, more than 130 billion. We have a current
account deficit. We just stay below 2% but the growth rate above 5% with a much better
middle class.

C. Listening for specific details: listening for numbers (audio 10)
Listening for numbers is a skill that requires your ability to listen for specific detail.
Listening for numbers requires you to eliminate
general ideas so you can focus on numbers,
percentage, or information that involves data.
Numbers can refer to time, price, height and width,
quantity, amount, frequency, and percentage.

Listen and choose which numbers that you hear.


1. Women in South Korea have gained 8/9 inches in height, on average, in the
past century
2. In June 2022, the number of international visitor arrivals to Indonesia was 345
/ 354 thousands
3. In March 2022, there were 26.16 / 21.62 million poor people.
4. Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. It consists of four / five major
islands and about 13/ 30 smaller groups.
5. Indonesia has many high mountains, the highest of which are over 14.000/

D. Listening for expressions to show causes and effects.


Often times, when you follow a lecture, your professors may explain causes and
effects of things. As active listeners, you need to anticipate what you will hear next so
you can organize information better as you follow the lecture. Recognizing the
expressions that signal causes and effects will help you to follow the ideas.

Common expressions that signal causes and effects:

E. Listening for causes and effects (audio 11)
Listen and complete the sentences with expressions that show causes and
effects. Then, label the expression as showing a cause or an effect.
1. Children today are not familiar with local Indonesian foods. ... of eating habit
that is highly influenced by fast food restaurants.
2. More young people are familiar with Korean or Western songs. ..., they have
little knowledge of traditional Indonesian songs.
3. Local fashion manufacturers lack marketing knowledge. ..., their products are

F. Listening for main idea (audio 12)


Listen to a podcast about the importance of supporting local products. Answer the
questions that follow.

G. Using expressions to explain causes


The following are things which receive little attention and low appreciation from most
Indonesian people. Choose two things from the list and think why they receive little
appreciation and attention. Use different expressions for explaining causes from part
D.
Example:
In big cities, more and more traditional
foods lose their popularity. Many young
people are not familiar with their names
and taste. This is caused by the invasion
of international foods in pop up booths
and food courts.

H. Speaking practice: Making a podcast


This is an individual speaking activity. You will present what you have finished in the
previous exercise (part G) in the form of a podcast. Share your ideas of why one item
that you have chosen are not popular. How do you think Indonesians can popularize
the item around the world?
In your podcast, you will:
1. Introduce the name of the podcast and a little bit about you
2. Introduce the topic of the podcast (e.g love of the country)
3. Discuss a little bit about the topic (do a short reading if necessary)
4. Share your ideas on ways to popularize the item from Indonesia
5. Use at least two expressions to show causes and effects
6. Include relevant introduction sounds to make your podcast more interesting,
if possible.
7. Your podcast should be short (within 5 minutes maximum) because you want
to keep it simple and as compact as possible.
If you need example, play the audio of a podcast from the previous activities.

o Microsoft power point allows you to record voice, insert sounds and pictures.
o Alternatively, you can also use the voice recorder in your phone to record your
voice.
o Some apps, such as inshot and kinemaster, are also simple to use if you have
access to them.
