Learning Activity and Material

Language, which is a vital means of

communication, does not only
connects members of its user
community but also becomes their
identity. The statement 'from his/her
language one is known' becomes a
linguistic fact as well as a social
phenomenon. Indonesian as the
national language is part of our identity
as Indonesians. When we use it in our
communication activities, that's when
we characterize ourselves as
Indonesian.

An interesting linguistic fact today is the

increasing percentage of educated
Indonesians who are becoming multilingual.
These include young people who can not
only speak Indonesian but can also speak
English, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, and
other foreign languages. As an international
language, English is the most frequently used
language besides Indonesian and local
languages.

It will be interesting to see how Indonesian and

English are used among millennial youth. Does being
multilingual help shape their nationalism and pride in
Indonesia and the Indonesian language? Does being
multilingual change the love for Indonesian? What
about their identity as Indonesians?
