Hi! My name is Emma. I am ten years old and I am English. I live with my family in

Brighton in the south of England.
My day usually starts quite early, I always get up at 7:30 on weekdays, but on the
weekends, I sleep and hour and a half longer. When I get up, I go to the bathroom
first. I wash my face to wake me up, brush my teeth and then I take a shower.
After thar I comb my hair and get dressed. I usually wear casual clothes, mainly jeans,
shorts, T-shirts and trainers. I always have breakfast with my mom and my little
brother, Tommy. My dad never has breakfast with us because he starts work early on
weekdays. I usually have a bowl of cornflakes with hot milk and toast with marmalade.
Before I go to school, I have to walk our dog, Leo.
I usually walk to school because I do not live very far. Classes start at 8:30. I like Math
best, but I am also good at Science and English. I have two breaks, at 11 and at 1
o’clock. I eat a sandwich and drink orange juice. I also play with my classmates in the
playground. School finishes at 3:30 and my dad picks me up and we come back home
by car. Then we have lunch together.
After lunch I play with my brother for a while and then I do my homework and study.
Twice a week I have basketball practice. I love doing sports.
Before dinner I sometimes meet my friends or watch a TV quiz. I seldom play
computer games; I simply find them boring. We have dinner at 7:30 and I often set the
table. After dinner I read a book or surf the Internet for a while.
At 9:30 I go to the bathroom to have a shower, brush my teeth, and put on my night
dress. Before I go to sleep, I listen to music on my MP3 player because it makes me
feel relaxed.

Your favorite gadgets!
Computers, the Internet, digital cameras, webcams, mobile phones, iPads and MP3
players… Technology has changed they was teenagers communicate.
Did you know that when your parents were your age, they didn’t have computers or
the Internet, or digital cameras, webcams, mobile phones or MP3 players? For most
young people today, it is impossible to imagine their life without these “gadgets”.
A recent study in the USA says that 10 to 17-year-olds will spend one-third of their
lives, or about 23 years, on the Internet. Did you know that the Internet was first used
by the US military and universities? It was invented by the US Department of Defense
in 1969 and only became accessible to the public in 1995. In just ten years, the
Internet has changed the world…
Today people can do almost anything on the Internet: they can work, shop for clothes
and food, and even “talk” to friends. The Internet has made the world a smaller place.
People have access to information from all over the world. They also have blogs:
personal journals, with text and photos.

Manual de Conocimientos Esenciales 26

Internet is not the only way for people to communicate today. In the USA, 75 per cent
of 15 to 17-year-olds have a mobile telephone. The first mobile phones arrived in the
1980s: they were big and heavy. Today, mobile phones are very small, and they can
send text messages, play music, and take photos. They have also become a fashion
object, and teenagers decorate and accessorize them!
Modern technology is fun, and it has changed our lives, but it does have some
negative aspects. For example, teenagers who use “shorthand” in their text messages
become bas spellers- they make lots of mistakes when they write. Moreover, some
teenagers spend too much time on the Internet when they could be doing sport or
other hobbies… or their homework! If you’re not careful, you can live without ever
leaving your home. That’s why modern gadgets should be used in moderation…
1. Who first used the Internet?
2. How many years did the public have to wait before using the Internet?
3. What possibilities does the Internet offer you today?
4. What are the differences between mobile phones today and in the 1980s?
5. What are the three reason why these gadgets should be used in moderation?
(ESL printables, 2010)
Speaking
Instructions: Answer and discuss the questions with someone.
1. Are there any new gadgets that you really want to get?
2. What is your favorite piece of technology you own?
3. Give some examples of technology that have made the world worse.
4. What do you think has been the most important new invention in the last 100
years?
5. How will computers change in the future?

The place where I live.
Hi friends! My name’s Sandra and I live in Hilltown. It is in the south of England. It isn’t
a very big town. About 9,000 people live here. There are about thirty shops in Hilltown
and there are three supermarkets. You can buy everything in the town that you need.
There are two bank and a post office in Main Street. There is a police station and a
library, too. You can find a big market where you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables,
meant and dairy products. I like going to the market with my mom.
There are three churches in the town center and there is a park, too. In the park
children can play because there is a playground. In our town you can find some
restaurants and there are five cafés. My favorite café is Icecave. It’s in Park Street
and the ice cream is fantastic here!
There are three elementary and two high schools in Hilltown. My school is in Mill
Street. We have got a very nice building. Next to our school there is a sports center.

Presenter: So, today's expert teacher is Gabriella, a university English teacher from
Leeds. Gabriella, hi and thanks for joining us today.
Gabriella: Thanks for having me!
Presenter: So, I have to confess today's topic is something I am really bad at: listening.
Most people say speaking is the most stressful part of learning a new language but, for
me, with my B1 German, speaking isn't so bad. At least I'm in control of it. But listening
… woah … people speak so fast and it's like my brain just shuts down. Am I just really
strange and bad at listening? Tell me, honestly, I can take it.
Gabriella: No, you're not strange. In fact, it's really common. You know, in exams most
people do pretty well in speaking compared with listening. Of course, exams are a
different situation from real life because in an exam you can't ask for something to be
repeated or explained. You usually have just one or maybe two opportunities to listen to
the dialogue and then it's gone.
Presenter: Right, but in real life I feel stupid always saying, 'Sorry, can you repeat that,
please?', especially if I still don't understand even when they repeat it. And people out
there listening, I hope you don't do this – quite often the person just repeats what they
said equally as fast and I'm still lost!
Gabriella: They do, don't they? In real life, you've got two strategies. One is to pretend
to understand and get out of the conversation as fast as you can.
Presenter: Yep, sounds familiar!
Gabriella: But, obviously that's not going to help if it's a conversation with high stakes. It
might have important consequences. I mean, if you're just chatting with a stranger at the
bus stop, it doesn't matter. But imagine you're at a government office or a bank, trying to
find out what paperwork you need to get your ID or open a bank account. What can you
do then?
Presenter: I hope you've got the answer, Gabriella, because I'm coming out in a cold
sweat just thinking about either of those situations!
Gabriella: The other strategy is to summarize what they said.
Presenter: But how can you do that if you didn't understand what they said?
Gabriella: Ah, well, you only start the summary, so you might say, in German in your
case, 'OK, so the first thing I have to do is …?' and make it a question. Or, for example,
'And which office is that again?' Break it down into smaller questions and the other
person will naturally start answering them. That way you're controlling the conversation
a bit more.
Presenter: I get you ...

Woman: So, what’s your usual day like? You always seem so busy.
Man: Well, I usually get up around 5:00 a.m. and work on the computer until 6:00 a.m.
Woman: Why do you get up so early?

Manual de Conocimientos Esenciales 44

Man: Well, I have to leave home at twenty to seven (6:40 a.m.) so I can catch a bus at
7:00 o’clock. It takes me about twenty minutes to walk to the bus stop from my house.
Woman: And what time do you get to work?
Man: Uh, my bus takes about an hour to get there, but it stops right in front of my office.
Woman: That’s nice. And what time do you get off work?
Man: Uh, around 5:00 o’clock. Then, we eat dinner around 6:30, and my wife and I read
and play with the kids until 8:00 or so.
Woman: So, when do you work on your website? You said one time that you create it at
home?
Man: Well, my wife and I often watch TV or talk until 10:00 o’clock. She then often reads
while I work on my site, and I sometimes stay up until the early hours of the morning,
but I try to finish everything by one or two.
Woman: And then you get up at 5:00 a.m.?
Man: Well, yeah, but it’s important to live a balanced life. I enjoy what I do, but you have
to set aside time for the family and yourself.
Woman: I agree.
Man: But I think my wife has the toughest job. She spends her whole day taking care of
our family . . . taking the kids to school, working in the garden, buying groceries, taking
the kids to piano lessons . . . [Wow!] It’s a full-time job, but she enjoys what she does.
Woman: Well, it sounds like you’re a busy, but lucky man.
Man: I think so too.

Hello, today I'm going to talk to you about my house. My house is in London. It is a
detached house, which means it's not joined on to any other houses. It is separate.
Downstairs there's a utility room where we keep the washing machine, the drier and a
freezer. Also, downstairs there's a kitchen, living room, conservatory and a bathroom.
The kitchen is quite big, it has a dining table where we eat, so we don't have a separate
dining room. There's the living room, where we usually sit and watch TV. This is the
conservatory, where we sit and look at the garden and watch the wildlife in the garden.
Even though we live in a city our garden has foxes, squirrels and lots of different birds.
Upstairs there are two big bedrooms, two small bedrooms, a bathroom and a study
where my husband has his computer and where he works. We moved to this house in
the year 2000 and we are quite happy here. It's near the station and very convenient for
the shops.

I have to work with computers and phones all the time in my work, either sitting in front
of a screen or living by the apps on my mobile. I think the number of voice-to-voice
phone calls has gone down a lot in the last few years, but with Facebook, Twitter, and
so on, I feel sort of chained to technology the entire length of the working week. So
when the weekend comes – and I’m afraid for me that’s Saturday morning, not Friday
night – there’s nothing I like better than switching off the computer, the mobile and the
landline and enjoying real peace and quiet. We live near to some fields and open
country, and I can listen to the birds sing, go for long walks, maybe drop in at our local
pub and have a drink with some of the locals. It’s not exciting, I grant you, but it’s very
relaxing and helps me remember I’m a human being, not a part of some computerized
machine. Of course, by Sunday night I’m already thinking about the working week
ahead, but never mind. I’ve had those two days to recharge my batteries, as they say.
