Lesson Citing Evidence to Support
5 General Statements

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Reading is one of the four important language skills that should be mastered. It
is one of the ways in getting knowledge and information that cannot be separated
from every learning process, and it does not only happen in a classroom setting
but also in our daily life. To process the information from the text into meanings,
it is important to utilize effective strategies. Hence, in this module, you will be engaged in different
activities to develop reading competencies.

Specifically, after this lesson, you are expected to:

1. cite evidence to support a general statement
2. make an inference

WHAT IS IT

A general statement
- is a person’s opinion, stand or view about a certain topic
- Is neither right nor wrong.
- grabs the reader’s attention.

Textual Evidence
- is information (details, facts, events, etc.) provided in a text to support an
inference, a main point, a claim, or a conclusion.
- is information that you find in the selection that make the writer’s statement
more believable. Moreover, you, as the reader, have a basis for agreeing
and disagreeing with it.

Kinds:
1. Explicit - information that supports the general statement is directly stated in the
text
2. Implicit- not stated directly, but the reader understands it because the clues are
in the text.

3
Example 1

1. What is the general statement in the text?

Boracay Island is a world-renowned travel destination.
It presents a main idea in the text.
2. What are the pieces of textual evidence that support the general statement?
➢ It entices beach loving tourists with its sun-bleached shores, powder-soft white
sands, breath-taking sunsets, each vibe nightlife and exciting island activities.
➢ Not only that, the island offers a wide selection of extraordinary food from local to
international flavors that will certainly suit every taste.
These sentences are explicit textual evidences. These give descriptions
why Boracay is considered to be a world-renowned travel destination.

Example 2:

After his dad gone upstairs, John clenched his fists and stomped out of the room
to go get a bucket and fill it with soapy water. His father had just told him they were having
visitor that evening and that John had to help out by doing some chores. Pete had finished
all his homework that day and had planned on spending the afternoon reading his favorite
novel, not doing household chores.

Evidence Background Knowledge Inference

John clenched his fists and When a person clenches his John is angry because he
stomped out of the room fists and stomp out of the needs to help out.
room, it means that he is
angry.

4
Based on the implicit evidence in the text, the readers make an inference that
John is angry.

Steps in Finding the Evidence

1. Read and understand the text thoroughly.

2. Identify the general statement or the main idea.
When you are able to identify the general statement or the main idea of the text, it will
be easy for you to identify the specific details that will support your claim.
3. Look for textual evidences that support the general statement or main idea in the text.
These sentences use examples, descriptions or explanation to make the claim of the
general statement valid.
4. Quote or paraphrase.
When using the author’s own words In citing text evidence, enclose each quote with
quotation marks and include the source. Likewise, it can also be paraphrased.
Paraphrasing is a reinstatement of the meaning of a text or passage using own words.
5. If the details are implicitly stated in the text, use the specific details from the text and our
prior knowledge to make an inference.

Did you know that some people don't do their reading assignments? It's shocking, but it's
true. Some students don't even read short texts that they are assigned in class. There are many
reasons for this. They may be distracted or bored. They may be unwilling to focus. They may be
unconfident readers. Whatever the reason, it has to stop today. Here's why.
Reading stimulates your mind. It is like a workout for your brain. When people get old, their
muscles begin to deteriorate. They get weaker and their strength leaves them. Exercise can
prevent this loss. The same thing happens to people's brains when they get older. Brain power
and speed decline with age. Reading strengthens your brain and prevents these declines.
You can benefit from reading in the near-term too. Reading provides knowledge.
Knowledge is power. Therefore, reading can make you a more powerful person. You can learn to
do new things by reading. Do you want to make video games? Do you want to design clothing?
Reading can teach you all this and more. But you have to get good at reading, and the only way
to get good at something is to practice.

Read everything that you can at school, regardless of whether you find it interesting.
Reading expands your vocabulary. Even a "boring" text can teach you new words. Having a larger
vocabulary will help you better express yourself. You will be able to speak, write, and think more
intelligently. What's boring about that?
Do not just discount a text because it is unfamiliar to you. Each time you read, you are
exposed to new ideas and perspectives. Reading can change the way that you understand the
world. It can give you a broader perspective on things. It can make you worldlier. You can learn
how people live in far away places. You can learn about cultures different from your own.
Reading is good for your state of mind. It has a calming effect. It can lower your stress
levels and help you relax. You can escape from your troubles for a moment when you read, and
it's a positive escape. The benefits of reading far outweigh those of acting like a doofus. So do
yourself a favor: the next time you get a reading assignment, take as much as you can from it.
Squeeze it for every drop of knowledge that it contains. Then move on to the next one.

6. Which best expresses the main idea of the second paragraph?

A. Reading is exciting. C. Reading strengthens your mind.
B. Age affects the body in many ways. D. Working out keeps your body in shape.

6
7. Why does the author think that you should read books that are boring?
A. You will eventually grow to love them if you read them enough.
B. You will get better grades in reading class.
C. You will make your teacher very happy.
D. You will learn new words.

8. Which is not a reason given by the author why students fail to complete reading assignments?
A. Students may be bored. B. Students may be distracted.
C. Students may be unwilling to focus. D. Students may be tired.

9. Which best expresses the author's main purpose in writing this text?
A. He is trying to persuade students to do their reading work.
B. He is teaching people how to become better readers.
C. He is explaining why people don't do their reading work.
D. He is entertaining readers with facts about the mind and body.

10. Which best describes the author's tone in the first three sentences?
A. Surprised B. Sarcastic C. Informative D. Irate

Lesson
Expressing One’s Reaction
6

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Do you know how to manage your reaction? Is it necessary to manage your

reaction? And the answer is a long Yeeees! Why? People who do a good job of
managing emotions know that it's healthy to express their feelings — but that it
matters how (and when) they express them.

After this lesson, you are expected to:

1. react to what is stated or expressed in a text,
2. express one’s view using personal experience,
3. determine the emotional reaction on a particular scenario,
4. determine one’s reaction using conditional sentences and
5. use expressions in agreeing/disagreeing/in doubt in a particular
scenario given.

WHAT IS IT

Emotional reaction is part of one’s life. If we feel emotions and we can express
them, then, you are normal. However, we must know how to control our emotions.
One of the students said that she was just expressing her rant to unpack her baggage and asked
her how she expressed it. She realized something. Are we satisfied if we voice out what we feel
even though someone we love gets hurt? Therefore, we must have some reminders on how we
manage our emotions or be able to react to situations in productive ways:

• They know they can choose the way they react instead of letting emotions influence
them to do or say things they would later regret.

• They have a sense of when it's best to speak out — and when it's better to wait
before acting on, or reacting to, what they feel.

• They know that their reaction influences what happens next — including how other
people respond to them and the way they feel about themselves.

People who can cope up with their emotions well are those who have good percentage
with their emotional intelligence (EQ). This is also a skill that we need to enhance/control so that
we will have a good reaction to a particular situation.

Lesson Using Sensible, Challenging and
Thought-Provoking Questions in
7 Panel Discussions

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

One way of eliciting various points of view regarding different topics is through the
learning experience in panel discussion/public forums. This strategy is effective if
a moderator could carry out a meaningful exchange of ideas. The key to any great
panel discussion/public forum is for the moderator or audience to ask great questions. Questions
are the heart of discussion. A great question will challenge anyone to a collaborative thought-
provoking conversation. But how are we going to create a great question for a great discussion?
In this lesson, you will not only learn how to create questions for panel discussion, but you will
also encounter challenging yet interesting exercises which I’m sure you would enjoy doing.
After this lesson, you are expected to:
1. Familiarize the procedures in a panel discussion.
2. Formulate thought provoking questions for a public forum / panel discussion.

WHAT IS IT

Stimulating thought provoking question in a panel discussion is a gateway to

come up with insightful answers. It means that, when you engaged yourself in
any group discussion this will be a vital part of your learning process. It helps you
flex and strengthen your cognitive muscles where you need to analyze, reason,
process and determine relationships.

If you really want to push yourself to think more deeply during discussion, it’s important to keep in
mind the kind of questions your teachers are asking.

The following types of questions have been shown to improve the outcome discussion, this will
help you think about the content more deeply.

1. Moral/ Ethical dilemmas

This type of prompt will make you think about the topic from multiple sides, it will give you
broader understanding of the subject. This will help you prepare for the discussion, as you
now have the tools to form your own opinion and ideas based on those that you have
researched.
Example: Is stealing always wrong? When is it right to steal?

2. Assess-Diagnose- Act
This type of question will help you through the process of problem solving. Each step will
help you evaluate the problem and prompt you to think of ways that can fix it/deal with it.

16
Example:
Assessment: What is the issue or problem at hand?
Diagnosis: What is the root of this issue or problem?
Action: How can you solve the issue?

3. Compare and Contrast:

This will help you to make connections and identify differences between ideas.
Understanding the similarities and differences between different ideas, will help you
develop a better argument because you understood both sides. This type of question will
lead to better constructed responses and in turn deeper, more well-rounded discussions.
Example: Why do you think face to face learning is better than online?

4. Interpretive-Evaluative
Questions about the intention or goals of the topic. You have to evaluate the reasons of
your intentions and finally add how this thing will be effective.
Example: What are the most critical changes this pandemic brought us?

5. Conceptual Changes
When you introduce yourself to a new concept or idea, you have to find a common
misconception about this topic and explain it in your response. These are great ways to
get you think critically about your own ideas, this will help you to reflect and self-evaluate.
Example: What has changed in your society during this period of “new normal”?

6. Personal Exploration
Exploring new idea in your own terms. Analyzing what it means to you as an individual.
This creative freedom will help you find your authentic voice.

Example: What does______ mean to you? Or Find an example of_________.

➢ Note that raising sensible and thought-provoking question is very important in any group
discussion. It will allow the person to tell honestly his inner thoughts and express his/her
real emotions.

Now that you know the types of questions that will help you raise sensible and thought-
provoking questions, it is also important to explore further by learning the five strategies
on how to prepare thought-provoking questions in a panel discussion.

1. Do your research.

The panelist and the audience need to do a research on the topic. This way, they will be
able to get in touch to the topic, get connected to the panelist’s work or interests, and the
issues which the audience will be interested in.

2. Make a list.
Make a list of potential questions from your research.

For Example:

• Why is the topic important nowadays?

• What are the important points that need to be discovered on this topic?

17
• What is the most essential question on everyone’s mind?

3. Choose the most essential questions.

Delete questions that are not necessary and choose questions which you think are
important to the topic.

4. Sequence your questions.

Your questions should be sequenced so that the panel members and audience will really
understand every bit of information.

➢ Strategic- start with questions that are designed to discuss what is happening in the world.
Example: Why does family conflict exist?

➢ Benefits- move to the benefits/consequences on why the audience should care.

Example: Why are children equally affected when family conflict occurs?

➢ Specifics-ask more specific questions where the panelist will be more inclined to show
concrete examples.
Example: What are the pieces of evidence which prove that family conflict may damage a
relationship?

➢ Application-ask a question with substantial value and has the ability to apply the
information.
Example: Why do we need to resolve the conflict in our family?

5. Rephrase and finalize your question.

Start with short questions in order for the audience and panel members to have focus in
understanding the concept thus, rephrasing and finalizing your question is necessary.

WHAT’S MORE

TASK 1

Now, let us check your understanding in identifying thought-provoking questions. Write

YES if the statement is a thought-provoking question and NO if it is not.

_________ 1. What effect has COVID-19 made on the lives of the Filipinos today?

TASK 2

This time try to complete the script below in a panel discussion with the topic “Wearing of Face
Mask” by adding thought-provoking questions.

Darwin: Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to our panel discussion that talks about
the importance of wearing face mask. I am Darwin Velasquez, your host for today’s event and let
me welcome our guests, Ms. Joe Ann Santos, Ms. Jessa Ecal, Ms. Gellie Nethercott and Mr. Alvin
Cruz.

Darwin:
______________________________________________________________________?

Joe Ann: Wearing face mask is necessary nowadays because this will help me prevent acquiring
the virus.

Darwin:
______________________________________________________________________?

Jessa: Yes, it makes me uncomfortable to wear mask because I can’t breathe well.

Darwin:
______________________________________________________________________?

Gellie: Wearing of face mask affects my daily routine because it makes me feel uneasy since it is
not our usual practice. It is also quite costly for I have to change it every now and then.

Alvin: Sir, Good morning. I am impressed with the guests’ answers. May I ask one of them to
answer my question? Some people said that when you are wearing mask, you are afraid to be
infected by the virus. As a good citizen, you are wearing mask because of the government’s
protocol. Does it make you feel weak? Why? Thank you, sir.

Jessa: No sir. It doesn’t make me feel weak, instead, this shows that I am a strong person who
obeys the government’s standard for my own welfare and protection of life.

Darwin: To sum up our discussion, one thing is common and is very applicable to all of us. We
should always wear mask especially if we are in a crowded area for our safety.

8 Questions for a Panel Discussion

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Participating in academic discussions does not only help a person gain

substantial information on a specific topic, it also lets him/her think critically about
the issues and points-of-views raised by the speakers. In the previous lesson, you learned about
the guidelines in constructing sensible, thought-provoking questions that can be used in a panel
discussion. This time, you will know more about the phases of a panel discussion and discover
how questions can enrich such learning engagement.

As you go through this lesson, you are expected to:

1. evaluate the appropriateness of the questions raised in a discussion; and
2. construct thought-provoking questions that are relevant to a speaker’s input.

WHAT IS IT
A panel discussion is a “meeting format” that involves a set of guests or
experts who provide information and express their views about certain topics or
issues in front of a crowd (Arnold, n.d., para. 1).

Study the set of steps in preparing for and conducting a panel discussion.

TASK 2

Read the following excerpt from a transcript of a panel discussion on the use of social
networking sites. Study the comments given by the guests. Then, write five relevant and
challenging questions that could be addressed to them at the end of the discussion. Use the
scoring guide found in Task 1.

Moderator: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to today’s panel discussion.
My name is Wilsyn. I am the chairman for today, and it is a great pleasure both to participate
in the panel with our guests and to welcome you to this event.

As we all know, our technology today has advanced more rapidly… (to the panelists) We have
invited you today to inform students about what they do online and how they use social
networking sites, and throughout the discussion, they will identify risks and learn how to
minimize and overcome them.

So, according to research, 99% of teens use the Internet and 77% of teens have a profile on a
social networking site. What do you think are some unique aspects of social networking sites?

Panelist 1 (JR): Uhm… For me, social networking sites are websites that allow us individuals
to build a public profile where you can share information about your personal interests,
photographs, and blog entries. It’s also a great way to connect with your friends.

Moderator: So, we all know that Facebook is the most widely used social networking site
today. Can you cite some advantages of this site?

Panelist 2 (Glenn): The website allows us to share with others what we desire to share, ask
public opinions and we can even ask questions. You can also share pictures, videos and what
you have been up to with your friend… And through Facebook Ads and Fan Page, you can
advertise your business.

Moderator: Prior to sharing information on the site, is the information you post online
confidential?

Panelist 3 (QR): Actually, when you post information online, it can be viewed by everyone, but
there is an option which you can select to make your profile private which allows only those
who you select as friends to view it.

The discussion continues…

Moderator: I’m happy to discuss all of this with you, and I really appreciate all of your
comments today. And I hope that this discussion continues out into your schools and into your
family and friends. Thank you, guys, for being here this morning.
