others.
The goal of learning a language is to communicate. Oral communication skills are fundamental to the
development of literacy and essential for thinking and learning. It is the glue that puts all the components of
a language together.

DAY 1

WHY STUDY ORAL COMMUNICATION?

Oral communication skills are fundamental to the development of literacy and essential for thinking and
learning. Through talk, students not only communicate information but also explore and come to understand ideas and
concepts; identify and solve problems; organize their experience and knowledge; and express and clarify their
thoughts, feelings, and opinions. Listening and speaking skills are essential for social interaction at home, at school,
and in the community.

Activity No. 1 – The learners choose an object at home to which they can compare communication. Three to
five volunteers will be given a chance to share their chosen objects. After that, link their responses to the
etymology of oral communication.

Activity No. 2 – Activate the student’s prior knowledge by distinguishing the TRUE and FALSE statements.
This is an interactive activity in the online class but the student was not able to join the online class, he/she
may answer in this module.

ETYMOLOGY
1.Communication (from Latin word ‘communicare’ meaning , to share or to have something in common.
2.Communication provides central meaning to human experience.
3.Keith Davis: Communication is a process of passing information and understanding from one person to
another.
4.John Adair: Communication is essentially the ability of one person to make contact with another and make
himself or understood.

Webster defines communication as a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through
a common system of symbols, signs or behavior.

NATURE OF ORAL COMMUNICATION

1. Communication is a process.
Communication as a process means it is a step by step activity and it is essentially a two-way process
that involves the active participation of both the sender and receiver. It is the act or process of using words,
sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings,
etc., to someone else. Communication is a dynamic process which is influenced by the communicator’s mood
and thinking. It is a complex process too. By complex process, it means, one message may be interpreted in
many ways by different people. In the sample image, a teacher explains a lesson in a class of 20 students.
There may also be 20 different understanding of the lesson. That is why there is a need to seek for clarification
called feedback.

2. Communication occurs between two or more people (the speaker and the receiver).
Communication occurs between two or more people acting as the speaker or the receiver of the
message. In other words, it is a two-way process of reaching mutual understanding, in which participants do
not only exchange (encode-decode) information, news, ideas and feelings but also create and share meaning. In
general, communication is a means of connecting people or places.

3. Communication can be expressed through written or spoken words, actions (nonverbal), or both spoken words
and nonverbal actions at the same time.
Communication is not all about sending or receiving facts in words. It does involve ideas and emotions
that are expressed through signs, symbols and gestures.

Activity No. 5- Write a two to three sentence definition of communication using the words from the picture,

Activity No. 6- There will be a recap of the previous discussion.

IMPORTANCE OF ORAL COMMUNICATION

An individual learns the basics of oral communication right at home. The school environment takes this
learning a notch higher by teaching the student how to interact with peers and teachers alike. The quality of
communication in student life will define professional communication later in life.

1.Good communication enables students to assimilate more from the learning process by empowering them to
ask relevant questions and discuss doubts.

2.Effective verbal communication nurtures the process of socialization by facilitating new friendships and
these in turn aid the learning process.

3.Productive communication is a boost to career development. An ability to convey thoughts in a clear and
precise manner would help a student to make a favorable impression at an interview and get the job that he
deserves.

4.Communication skills inculcate professionalism in speaking styles, ways of self-expression and attitudes
towards others, and these traits would hold students in good stead in their professional lives.

TOP TIPS FOR IMPROVING ORAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS

When trying to get your point across to others through spoken words (orally), here are a number of key
things to bear in mind:
• Clarity: Be clear. Don’t overcomplicate things. Use simple language. Before you speak, think
about the message that you want to get across. George Bernard Shaw is reputed to have said that “The
single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place”. Check with others to
make sure that they have understood your message.

• Brevity: Don’t waffle: it’s infuriating. Don’t ‘dance around’ your subject or give way more
background information than is necessary. Don’t use one hundred words where ten will do. Get to the
point as quickly as possible and then reinforce it.
• Empathy: Consider your audience. Who is listening to you? Will they understand you? Have
they got the time to listen to you? Might you need to speak up, speak more slowly, or explain certain
words or phrases? Could they be offended or upset by anything that you have to say?

• Respect: Be respectful when speaking with others. Good manners are always appreciated.
Don’t use offensive language. Don’t stereotype people, and be careful not to use racist, sexist,
homophobic, ageist, or other prejudiced language when you speak. If you are presenting, make sure
to thank your audience for listening.
• Confidence/authority: To really get a message across, deliver it with confidence. If you believe
in your message, it is more likely that others will too. Speak up so that your listeners can hear you.
Ensure that what you say is based on evidence and reason, rather than emotion or belief.

• Tone: How you say something is almost as important as what you say. If you sound angry,
irritated, bored, or sad, it will interfere with your message. A little humour is usually appreciated, but
if you crack joke after joke while you speak, you are likely to devalue what you are saying.

Activity No. 8
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION

The process of communication refers to the transmission or passage of information or message from the sender
through a selected channel to the receiver overcoming barriers that affect its pace.

The process of communication is a cyclic one as it begins with the sender and ends with the sender in the form
of feedback. It takes place upward, downward and laterally throughout the organization.

The process of communication as such must be a continuous and dynamic interaction, both affecting and being
affected by many variables.

Communication process consists of certain steps where each step constitutes the essential of an effective
communication.
The following is a brief analysis of the important steps of the process of communication.
