MELC Week 1
THE NATURE AND ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION

Learning Target

By the end of the session, you will be able to say

I can define and identify the importance and value of communication
comprehensively.

Greetings in the name of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus! Hooray Hearters!
What an amazing year to start, under these sessions, you will have to learn
and appreciate the essence of acquiring an effective communication. In this
chapter, I will bring to an amazing topic that will sure helpful for you to
develop your understanding towards contextualizing nature and elements of
communication.
So, let’s start!

Definition of Communication
If we consult dictionaries and other sources of information, there will be numerous meanings but the
essence is only one; that is, the exchange or the transmission of messages.

Most of us assume we know more or less what communication is and the important role it plays in our
lives. Analyze some other definitions:

“A transaction in which the participants are mutually engaged in the process of creating meaning.” –
Comeaux (1996)

“The communication process begins when a message is conceived by a sender. It is then encoded-
translated to a signal or a sequence of signals and transmitted by a particular medium or channel to a receiver
who then decodes it and interprets the message, returning a signal in some way that the message has or has not
been understood.” – Hill Watson (1997)

“Communication is defined as the transfer or delivery of thoughts, messages, ideas or knowledge,

whether by speech writing or signals from a Sender or Receiver.” – W. Bentham (1994)

“Communication is a process where audience understanding is created when a message is sent by a

communicator through an appropriate channel or medium.” – Harvest Missions International (2002)

The Importance of Communication

Is communication vital to man? Can man exist without a language? Will it be possible to have a society
of men who are not communicating with one another? These questions do not need a thorough research to find a
valid answer. By nature, man needs a language and certain communication skills to relate his experiences, air
his feelings and emotions, and take part in discussions in his daily routine life.

In other words, communication is an indispensable thing. People communicate to persuade, amuse,

inspire, and incite others to action. Trade, commerce, and industry are made possible through communication.
Through the use of oral and written media, man is able to see and hear what transpires in his surroundings and
around the world. Inventions and modern technologies are disseminated through the power of communication.

The Value of Communication

Almost everyone at one time or another has been told that good communication is valuable. It was
perhaps a teacher or a parent who first said it was essential to communicate one’s thoughts as clearly as
possible. At the time, you probably accepted the idea without really understanding what good communication
meant. Yet today, you are surrounded with messages about “credibility gaps” in newspapers, magazines, and on
televisions; you see movies and plays often which focus on the human crises resulting from failure to
communicate; then finally you find yourself taking a course dealing with that very subject. There must be
something in communication worth an entire book on your part and a lot of thought on yours.

The specific behavior which sets humans apart from other creatures is having the ability to use of
symbols for the purpose of communicating. Myers maintains that communication is at the core of our
humanness. It is the essential process through which we develop our individual humanity and our relationships
with others. Communication is basically tied to a person’s concern about individuality and to a person’s needs
for social relationships.

Nature of Communication
1. Communication is a process.
2. Communication occurs between two or more people (the speaker and the receiver)
3. Communication can be expressed through words (verbal), actions (nonverbal), or both at the same time.

“Communication is a systematic process through which individuals interact

through symbols to create and interpret meaning.”
