Music Search Committee

Department of Music
Fairfax County Public Schools

Dear Director of the Choral Music Search Committee,

Please accept this letter in application for the advertised choral music position in Fairfax
County Public Schools. As a Fall 2020 vocal music education graduate of James Madison University
School of Music, I have had a wide range of singing and vocal pedagogy experiences that have
prepared me to teach in both choral and general music settings. I sang with the top JMU ensembles
The Madison Singers and The JMU Chorale as well as served as the Music Director of The
Madisonians Show Choir. Through my training and engagement with music I feel strongly that I am
ready to teach choral music and/or general music while creating a safe music making community
within your school.
Based on my educational and musical experiences I believe that all students should learn how
to engage with and perform music. Students need to become familiar with various genres, as well as
have the ability to notate, read, compose and analyze music. Within the classroom, students shall
discuss the history of music and how it has made an impact on both today’s music and culture. In my
classroom, students will learn what I have described above as well as various styles of repertoire
while exploring the different elements of music and how it impacts society. I believe in creating a
culture that is inclusive to all and that helps nurture a love for music. I will accomplish this goal of
inclusivity through repertoire and activity planning for all genres and populations in my music
classroom.
Through my current position as a General Music Teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools,
courses, practicums, and other opportunities I have gained the knowledge and skills to be successful
in this position. I have worked with multiple vocal ensembles at many different experience levels. I
have worked with students of all ages online and in person. I have written and executed lesson plans
that have covered multiple different areas of music, as well as learned to adapt lesson plans to meet
the specific needs of individuals. I am also confident that through my two years of serving as a 5th
and 6th grade choral director I have developed the skills to create a welcoming and inviting
classroom culture.
Thank you for considering me for this opportunity. If there are any additional materials that
you need, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.

Warmest Regards,
Kathryn Morgan
